With 100+ kids on most college football teams these days, there's a great number of players not ready for varsity football. So why not play a sec jv season and play those games on Tuesday and Wednesdays. I'm sure a lot of us would attend and at the least watch on television. Seems like it would be a great idea for fans, players and not to mention another revenue stream for ncaa. Hell maybe even use this money to pay players?

LSU struggles to snap the ball before the play clock runs out and complete more than 5 passes at the Varsity level. Why would you want to see something worse?

It was common 50+ years ago when there were no scholarship limits.

But my first thought is that in today's game no coach is going to want to risk injury to players in games that don't matter.

AD's won't want to spend the money the money for extra coaches, extra road trips when athletic funding is already a major issue at most colleges. Not many tickets would be sold for a mid-week JV game. This would lose money.

How would eligibility work? Can you play JV games and still redshirt?

I both laughed and cried when I read this post.

They do, more common in the Northeast.
Here is a little writeup about a Dartmouth JV football game

Dartmouth JV vs Williams

I like the idea of having JV in all sports in college.

Would give the bench players some meaningful game time and give them a chance to adjust to the college game.

Would also be a good place to train young officials.

To cut down on costs you wouldn't have to play according to conference affiliation. Obviously you would want to schedule an LSU-Alabama due to interest but you could easily play primarily regional or in-state teams.

I would imagine it would bring in some decent revenue as I'm sure a team like LSU could easily get 6-7000 people a game and smaller teams could easily get 500-1000 a game.

In track red shirts are allowed to compete in races as "unattached" and it is helpful to adjusting to the college atmosphere and competitiveness. I see no reason why it wouldn't help in football.

I do know that NSU plays a JV basketball schedule against some Juco teams.

For a little reference:

Not enough depth on the D1 level to do it due to scholarship limits. D3 does it because they have an unlimited number of kids. Mt. Union had 194 kids on their roster last year. Without a JV team, most of them would never see the field.

You could expand and let already enrolled non-recruited non-scholarship players join. May find a few hidden gems already enrolled at the school that otherwise wouldn't have tried college ball.

I'm pretty confident that there are enough HS football players at almost every college that could compete in a JV setting. Would be an easy rule to implement.

Make a rule where you can't play more than 2 years of JV ball.In the beginning of the academic year hold an open tryout for the JV team. Allow Red shirts to play as well.Limit the team to a certain amount of players (combined between scholarship/walk-on/tryout students).

Have 6 game seasons and start playing in October. Gives the team from mid-August till October to practice and prepare.

Other D1 colleges have JV teams, no reason it can't be implemented across the board.

There are several colleges that have the JV teams. I coached at a small college a while back. Our JV team played UK (Kentucky) every year. Not sure if they still do it.

I would definitely go. Plus, if an LSU or aTm would travel and play a JV game at NSU or one of the other state schools I could realistically see 10K + show up.

Why on earth would on FCS team want to play an SEC JV team? Could get better competition playing against another FCS team.

JV vs JV only.
