The Indians’ 6-0 win over the Cubs in Game 1 of the World Series on Tuesday night generated a 46.5 rating in the Cleveland designated market. In Chicago, the Fox broadcast drew a 34.1 rating, which is a monster number for the nation’s third-largest TV market.

The 46.5 rating for the World Series in Cleveland is better than all but one of the 13 NBA Finals broadcasts featuring the Cavs the last two years — including Game 7 in June, which posted a 46.3 rating in Cleveland.

The only Cavs Finals broadcast the last two years that topped Tuesday’s 46.5 for the World Series was Game 3 in 2015. That broadcast drew a 49.0 rating for WEWS.

The 2015 Finals had an average rating of 43.7 in Cleveland. The game-by-game numbers, starting with the series opener against Golden State that year: 41.4, 42.1, 49.0, 45.7, 42.5 and 42.0.

The average rating for the most recent Finals dropped to 38.8. The first five games all had ratings of 38.5 or under — 36.0 for Game 1, followed by ratings of 32.1, 36.7, 37.4 and 38.5. Game 6 at Golden State had a monster number here (44.3), and Game 7 was even better (and incredibly impressive, considering the number of fans who didn’t watch the game at home).

Hopefully the attendance rebounds next year and they go back to consistently high attendance

They ranked 28th out of 30 teams in attendance this year. The Marlins are ahead of them.

Even knowing that was Lebron's 1st NBA Finals home game since returning to CLE(I think), how in the world does that game draw a higher rating in CLE than game 7 of the Finals?

It's sad how bad their attendance is now. Jacobs Field used to be a rowdy environment back in the 90s and it was packed regularly

It goes in cycles. There was a time 15-20 years ago when the Indians and Orioles had long streaks of consecutive sellouts at home during the regular season. Now, neither team draws well at all. Next year, you will see the Indians attendance spike upwards. It always happens the year AFTER a World Series run.

He was talking about game 3 of the NBA finals in 2015. Pretty clearly actually.

Yeah, I believe they went YEARS without no selling out a game during the 90s.

Yep, 455 straight, then a record, which equates to over 5 years.

TV ratings are far from a perfect science. We could argue that the 46.3 rating for Game 7 seems way low, considering the amount of interest, but the thousands who watched the games at bars or other public gatherings didn’t count for ratings purposes. It’s also true that more people watch TV in the fall than the summer, which is an advantage Fox has for the enticing Cubs-Indians matchup.

Not to mention, Progressive field holds 35,000 and Game 1 had the Cavs game going on for another 20,000. So that is 35,000 people at the stadium and not watching on tv. Cleveland is a population of 400,000. So that means there was a full 10% of the population more in attendance at the games then were at home for the Cavs playoffs.

Obviously that's not perfect, but you gotta say the ratings for Cleveland would be a solid 10% more if the stadiums were the same and there weren't two games going on.

Yeah, because it's basketball.

Every goddamn gallup/Harris poll for the last 15 years has said this over and over and over.

NBA used to be #4 at its peak in 2004.

Now NBA is #5/6...people think the product sucks and is rigged.

1. NFL
2. Baseball
3. College Football
4. Auto Racing
5. Ice Hockey/NBA - tie

Well that's a silly poll to judge the popularity.

I love the NBA, but it isn't my favorite sport. I'm still gonna watch a lot of it

TV ratings are a good measuring stick but an inherently imperfect science. There is no way that less people watched Game 7 of the NBA Finals than Game 1 of the World Series. Absolutely no way. Hell, there were thousands of Clevelanders watching Game 7 in the streets, you think they were accounted for in these TV ratings?
