re: Choosing an NHL team to follow (STL Blues, it is - questions on pg. 7)

The Oilers aren't sniffing the playoffs for years but you'd be surprised how the bandwagon accusations work.
I'm not really concerned about bandwagon accusations. I'll know that I didn't start following whichever team I choose simply because of their success and that I won't be hopping from team to team.

That's something I'll just have to live with, I suppose.

Follow both the Blues and Jackets
Since they aren't in same division, you can root for them to play each other in Finals.
While that sounds nice, I've learned that (like the QB cliché) if you have two favorite teams, you don't have one.

Here's the last thread bump that I'll make, before I make my decision (that I'll either make in the next few hours, or some time tomorrow).
If anyone has anything left to say, say it now.
(Once again, I apologize for keeping this thread alive.)

Enjoy getting that arse beat by my Blackhawks
But seriously, I would go with the Blues. Simply because of Oshie

I want to thank everyone again for their input.
After considerable deliberation, I've chosen my team. This decision was difficult and far more stressful than I would've thought, but this is probably the last fanhood decision that I'll ever make.
Well, without further ado, I plan on being a lifelong fan of:
Ultimately, the Blue Jackets were defeated by their name and everything that goes along with it. Without going off on a tangent, I'll say this:
There's nothing wrong with embracing your history, but I find the pervasive nature of the Civil War references to be excessive and a little off-putting. It's not a huge deal, but, when the race was this close and the decision was this difficult to make, everything is a significant factor. (And, again, this has little to do with me being from the South)
It might sound silly, but I didn't want to say and/or hear "Go Blue Jackets!" and think of Sherman's march to the sea or anything of the sort. It simply felt like that was always going to be an annoyance.
That, coupled with the fact that:
1. I strongly prefer the logo (for various reasons), color scheme, and jerseys of the Blues
2. St. Louis is in the same division as Dallas (allowing me to take a trip there to root for the Blues, when they visit)
3. Columbus is notably further away than St. Louis (not a big factor, but a factor nonetheless)
(Among other things)
Was enough to convince me to choose the Blues.
All of you made this decision very difficult and I'm sure it would have been fun to follow the team with you guys. I sincerely hope that all of you get to witness the CBJ win a Stanley Cup in the near future (just not by beating the Blues ).
With all that said, I'm ready to be a Blues fan. For my first in-person NHL experience, I plan on making the trip up to St. Louis for a home game, but that'll probably be sometime in January, February, or March. In the meantime, I'm going to get Gamecenter Live (or possibly Center Ice - I haven't decided yet) and buy a Blues hat and/or shirt to show my support.
Also, if any Blues fans happen to read this, I plan on joining a Blues fansite/forum, is letsgoblues.com the one to join or am I better off just posting in the Blues section of hfboards.hockeysfuture.com (or somewhere else)?

This. St. Louis is a great team until they run into LA in the playoffs.

That can be said about most teams.
It also helps when our best players get run annually in the playoffs putting them on the shelf

Welcome aboard (to the NHL). As a newer Blue Jackets' fan, let me start the ribbing. Your coach couldn't get it done in our city, so good luck in St. Louis.

Hitch is an awesome coach. Too bad it didn't work out with the cbj.
But that being said, I love what Richardson, Jarmo and Davidson are building.

If u need any Blues stuff, let me know. i have tons of Blues shite, most never worn or put up. And when you decide to visit for a game, let me know, i can try to get a good deal on seats.
I've been following the Blues since 1978. So i've been there for all of the highs and lows.

Sorry, I couldn't help on the last bit, but I at least wanted to say I finally saw your post and wasn't ignoring you. We have an all-year MSB hockey thread, so get geared up for that, and the banter gets pretty fun. Some of the rivalries get intense, but there's also grudging respect between most fans.
I think giving your Southern-ness, the Blues was the right call. I still think of them as the South's hockey team, despite teams now in Texas and Florida. You can learn a lot of history simply from the wikipedia page, which you should read. But a few things about the team you have thrown your lot in with:
-- Being a Blues fan is about suffering. You seem like the kind of guy who doesn't want to bandwagon jump, so it seems your mentally prepared for it, but the Blues were the first expansion team to make the Stanley Cup finals... and they still haven't won it. They had Gretzky and Hull. And no Cups. 26 straight playoff appearances. no Cups. You get the picture.
-- If you are on twitter, follow Shattenkirk. It's one of the few athlete feeds that is genuinely funny.
-- TJ Oshie sweats the tears of eagles. America's hero.
-- Center depth is critical in the NHL. the Blues have Statsny, Backes, Berglund, and Ott. That's almost unfair. Backes would be a top-liner on most teams. Berglund would be a good 2C, and Steve Ott... holy shite do I love Steve Ott. He's certifiably insane. He once licked a guy's faceshield before a faceoff. He plays the role of villain so well that during a ceremonial faceoff, a Make-A-Wish kid threw him out of the circle.
-- Tarasenko is going to be a star.
-- Their best player who won't be under contract next year is Jordan Leopold, who is a pretty solid defenseman. That means the window is open now, and the core is set for a few years. You have at least two seasons before they start having cap issues, probably longer.
-- You are now sworn to hate the Blackhawks. Get on it.

I didn't expect to ever see this thread get bumped again.
I'm looking forward to it. I'll probably read more than post, though, due to my lack of knowledge.
I'm aware of this, it only makes it easier to root for the Blues. When they finally win the Cup, it'll be that much more enjoyable (even for a new fan, such as myself). As I said in my post, this is going to be a lifelong commitment.
Understood. I'm sure, as the years go by, it'll only get easier.
Anyway, I appreciate the response. I got a fairly lengthy response on a Blues board that put this season into context, but every little bit of information that I can get is appreciated (I have a lot of catching up to do).
Thank you, sir.
Oh, I am. I listened to (and watched, from the third period on) yesterday's game.

I don't post on HF Boards, but I read quite frequently. It's really great. Love how every team has its own board and then there's a general board, as well. Plus the trade rumors/free agent board (though sometimes way off) is often entertaining.
