Former 49ers general manager Trent Baalke lost his job on Sunday in large part for a number of questionable draft decisions over the years. After all, a roster made up largely of his picks won just two games in 2016.

His biggest faux pas may have occurred in the most recent draft, and could’ve possibly saved both his and Chip Kelly’s jobs. According to a report from Mike Garafolo of NFL Network, Kelly and the coaching staff wanted to draft rookie phenom Dak Prescott, but Baalke elected to go in a different direction.

Good thing they didn't. That organization would have ruined him.

To be fair, even the Cowboys were looking in a different direction.

Casual reminder: the 49ers basically fired Jim Harbaugh to keep Baalke.

They're a mess from the top down. They should have found a way to keep Harbaugh, but hindsight is 20-20. It's going to be a long time before they're even able to sniff the post season. They seem to have no direction and hit the reset button at will. York is a mess.

Dak Prescott went to the perfect situation. Best OL in the NFL. Great running game. Good defense. One of the best WRS and a veteran TE. There is zero doubt Prescott would have struggled greatly anywhere else.

Any QB in the league who doesn't turn the ball over would have success at Dallas right now.

Dak wouldn't have saved SF or either of them their jobs.

Anytime a story like this comes out from an "insider" it's because a pissed off party (Chip Kelly) leaks something to him so he can tell the world and garner support for said party so he can repair or restore his reputation.

Chip wants to stay in the NFL and wants personnel control (which of course was an absolute disaster in Philly). He's using Garofollo to get out the word that he's not the reason the 49ers are shite.

The conflict began when Harbaugh wanted to try to develop Kaepernick into more of a pocket passer. Baalke wanted Harbaugh to continue to use all the zone read plays that got the 49ers to the Super Bowl in the 2012-13 season. The battle between Harbaugh & Baalke began that following offseason & came to a head right before the start of the season. As Brady Hoke struggled that same season at Michigan, the Wolverines brass flew out to the Bay Area to set up a deal with Harbaugh late that fall. Harbaugh knew he was out at seasons end with the 49ers, made a handshake deal with his alma mater which is why the deal happened so quickly after the 49ers season ended. Harbaugh to Michigan was the best kept sports secret for several months.

Agreed. Chip is probably behind this leak & looks like a petty a-hole for doing so but he absolutely right though. Baalke is garbage. Kelly should have kept his mouth closed because now he's had two failures in the NFL where he has butted heads with management. That's not a good look if he has hopes of landing another NFL gig.

Prescott when with the 135th pick

Round 4: Pick 35 (133rd overall) – compensatory - LSU CB Rashard Robinson

Robinson was suspended indefinitely from LSU's football team midway through the 2014 season due to a failed drug test and substandard academics. After missing a semester, he was arrested in June 2015 for unauthorized entry into a teammate's apartment and was not allowed to re-enroll.

Rashard Robinson was on the field for 526 of his team's snaps on defense in 2016. PPF had him as the 5th best rookie, behind Prescott prior to his injury.

5. Rashard Robinson, CB, 49ers
When surrendering 24 receiving yards is a “bad” game, you know you’ve set the bar high. Against the Bills, Rashard Robinson yielded two-of-three targets in 44 snaps before leaving with an apparent head injury. Hopefully his absence won’t be too long, as he’s easily the top rookie corner in the NFL at the moment.

Pretty sure people said it was a dumb move even then.
