ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen will be off the air as he begins treatments for throat cancer.
"More than a week ago, I was diagnosed with a Stage IV throat cancer," Mortensen said in a statement Friday. "My focus shifted significantly to gathering information about the specifics of this cancer. The initial diagnosis was confirmed Friday and there is another test remaining that will determine the best possible treatment plan that will commence in the very immediate future.

Sad for Mort
But here's my joke based on the thread title: Cancer has been at ESPN since the beginning, his name is Chris Berman.

I didn't think so.
Dang, this is wild. Alcohol can be another contributing factor.
This stinks.
I really enjoyed him on ESPN and other programs.

They'll never find a cure for cancer. They're making way too much money off of chemo treatments and people donating all that money that goes in their wallets.

Love me some Mort. Hopefully he can pull out of this.

The outlook depends on which type of Stage IV throat cancer he has. If it is "locally advanced," generally referring to the spread to adjacent lymph nodes and tissues, then the survival rates are in line with what the OP posted.
If, on the other hand, it is a metastatic spread to other organs/distant tissues in the body, the median survival rate is less than 6 months.

Sure there are probably some morally-bankrupt people that have incentives for there not to be a cure.
However, there are physicians and scientists all around the world working on discovering a cure.
Not only is there a moral once incentive, but being the person to discover the cure would result in a lot of money, fame, and recognition.
