Watching these guys play, I'm wondering why more don't get tryouts with NFL teams. Yeah the qb's and rb's mostly suck and the linemen are small but I've seen quite a few nfl caliber plays by wr's and corners. It's a shame because nfl guys definitely aren't 10 to 100 times better like the salaries would suggest. Google says Matt Ryan makes more than every player in the league COMBINED.

Many of them made the camp rounds for a couple years in the NFL and when it became obvious they wouldn't make a 53 man roster, decided to focus on the CFL. Anyone who is remotely talented enough to play in the NFL would have at least had a training camp offer at some point. Almost every QB in the league has for sure, check Wikipedia rosters if you don't believe me.

Pretty much the only guys that never got a legit NFL shot were the guys from Canadian colleges and super small schools. And if they showed enough in the CFL, they would get a tryout.

you're starting to see a lot of Canadian players get a shot recently, eventually it will be the Triple A of the NFL.

The CEO of Google isn't 100 times better at his job than your average Walgreens store manager would be either.

I understand the economics, I just said it was a shame.

That's not what salaries suggest, fwiw.

If so, they're likely playing in the NFL. You think NFL teams don't scout CFL?

The NHL is woven into the DNA of Canada

They know they aren't this "big" nation, but they take pride in kicking arse at hockey, way more than a single sport in the US

Plus, the influx of immigrants to Canada means a higher volume of soccer and basketball players, though many still choose hockey - see Nazem Kadri for example

US Football is a clear #4 sport in Canada

Oh, I'd disagree with that one. Maneuvering one of the largest, most recognizable companies in the world through the challenges that face multinational, multi-billion dollar entities is likely at least 100 times more challenging than telling teenager Tommy which aisle the Strydex is on.

Yeah....no.

Marissa Mayer at Yahoo proves that's false.

Basketball is bigger than football in Canada? Serious question, I have no clue

Is it a 100 times more challenging? Possibly.

But the actual performance of the CEO is not worth a 100 times that of someone else. CEO's earning billions running companies routinely run their companies into bankruptcy. Total morons who just happen to be the son of the company founder can lead a company to huge profits without even the most basic business knowledge.

My point was that salaries aren't directly proportional to worth.

Most international players in the NBA now. Vince Carter was a HUGE deal in Toronto and the Raptors have been one of the more consistent teams in the league the last few seasons.

True, but most of those guys are from the Toronto area/Ontario. In places like Saskatchewan, Winnipeg, and Edmonton, I bet football is the clear #2.

I know this is anecdotal, but I have been to a couple CFL games in Montreal and Ottawa, and the fans a pretty diehard and do a good job packing the stadium.

Really the only difference I saw in fans is that not much of tailgate scenes.

I would compare it to Triple A baseball where it is serious but the teams are still engaging the fans. Cheerleaders/spirit squad walking around and taking pics. Crazy promotion nights.

They are making 85K, tax free, for 5 months of employment. 75% of Americans would be all over that.

a little difference... no one cares who wins in Triple A baseball, but in Canadian football, they're trying to win the national championship of their country. we look at it as minor league compared to the NFL, but in Canada, the Eskimos ARE Edmonton's team, the Alouettes ARE Montreal's team, etc.
