Can Indiana pull a Saban type hire or have they been mostly irrelevant too long?

I see similarities between the two. Neither are in spots that I think of as a place that I would love to live, but both have a long history of pulling in great recruits.

Indiana should not have many problems returning to glory. It's close to Indianapolis, Chicago, Cincinnati, and Louisville so there is plenty of good recruiting in the area.

They certainly have the fan support and I've never been to Bloomington but I hear it is a nice college town.

There is no reason IU shouldn't be at the top of the B1G. Izzo is the only legend in there.

Bloomington is a damn nice college town - one of the best ones in the Big Ten in my opinion and up there with Ann Arbor and Iowa City for true Big Ten college towns. For comparison, I'd take it over Tuscaloosa ten times out of ten.

There is no reason that shouldn't be elite. Indiana is (still) an excellent high school basketball state that produces a ton of talent. They're the fourth-best program in their own state right now.

They should have fired Crean 4 or 5 years ago and made a run at Brad Stevens before he jumped to the Celtics.

If they're willing to pay they can absolutely pull off a big hire. Everything else is there

Steve Alford seems like a logical choice.

Would Alford leave UCLA? I know he's an Indiana alum.

They will hire either Brad Stevens or Gregg Marshall.

I think Stevens is a pipe dream.... he's got a great gig in Boston with tons of assets. I got a few Indiana alums around the office and they showed me some article some writer in Indianapolis wrote about possibly Donovan but I also think that's too far fetched. I think it's hoiberg, (been hearing him connected with Illinois) Alford, or Marshall.

The Midwest is THE hotbed for college bball talent. But that doesn't matter in big time college basketball.

People will say it's to early but if I were Indiana I would go after Dan Hurley

Alford has always been the obvious choice but they pass on him every time.

Billy Donovan is that saban type of hire for Indiana, but I doubt he comes back to college just yet.

It will never be relevant again until Bobby Knight dies.

They flat out had hate in their heart for Alford when he was with Iowa too so that'd be funny to see.

Alford was a flat out jerk when he was at Iowa. Just an unreasonable prick who thought he was entitled to everything. That didn't fly too well in Iowa City. Combine that attitude with the fact he did not produce what he was expected to produce and things weren't going well.

He left Iowa for New Mexico before Iowa had a chance to fire his arse, and that was coming. His tenure at Iowa was a failure.

I hope he takes the Indiana job so he can crater that program even more and we get the chance to boo him once a year when he comes to Carver Hawkeye for conference games.
