Will Bryce Harper become baseball's first $400 million player when he hits free agency following the 2018 season?

Don't sell him short, says the Washington Nationals right fielder and National League MVP.

Asked during an interview on 106.7 The Fan in Washington, Harper indicated he might get a record free-agent contract even beyond the $400 million deal that has been the subject of speculation.

“Yeah, I mean I don’t really think about that stuff. I just try to play the years out and do everything I can to help my team win,” the 23-year-old Harper said. “But don’t sell me short. That’s what you’re doing right now to me, so don’t do that.

then i guess Trout is a 450Million man?

Trout is a better player, and plays very good defense in CF.

Is Trout for sure better? He has def been more consistent but Harper last year was just sick last year and better than Trout. I means 1.109 OPS are you freaking kidding me?!?! At 22....

Dave Cameron of Fangraphs had an interesting article on this yesterday.

Is any one player worth that kind of money in a sport where one player can't instantly transform your team into a contender from a joke ala Lebron

Baseball revenue has been exploding, so salaries are following suit. Ian Kennedy (who isn't even good) just signed a $70 million deal.

I know that but instead of getting Harper with that money you could get 2 or 3 really good players. At some point baseball revenues will come down. National tv ratings are down and mlb is way behind in terms of social media use. Also at some point local
Networks won't be able to increase their payouts

The Marlins (the cheapest franchise in baseball, hell in all sports) just gave Giancarlo Stanton a $325 million deal. He is a great player, but he isn't as good as Harper. Also that deal bought out two years where he was already under team control, which are cheaper than FA years. Plus we have three more years of possible inflation. It will be massive.

As a Nats fan, not even sure we can do it with the MASN money dispute, but for Washington, we have to do everything possible.

That quote reminds me of Bull Durham.

It's been over 30 years and tons of scandals and PEDs and all of us learning what pro athletes are all about...

And Harper is still spouting 1980's bullshite, total lies, boring cliches. "just want to help my team, don't care about money, just want to give it my all."

It's so retro, it's funny.
