I think a case can be made that he has assumed that mantle this season. Not that it's all about statistics, but .340/25/60 isn't too shabby for the midway point in the season. OBP of .470, SLG .705, and OPS of 1.175.

It's also starting to look like teams are increasingly adopting the strategy of not pitching to him. Three walks last night, and one of the Nats' announcers commented that Giants Mgr. Bruce Bochy was giving 22 year-old Harper 'the Barry Bonds treatment'.

Harper has had some injury problems, and this is the first year that he has hit for a high average. Who knows what the future holds, but AS OF TODAY I think Bryce Harper is clearly the best all-around player in MLB (can run and plays great defense, too, but that's common knowledge).

Agree or not?

Harper is actually not going to not steal many bases. It is not worth the injury risk.

Trout is still more of the all-around stud, but Harper is an absolute monster. However, there are other great answers like Stanton, Goldschmidt, Miggy, Josh Donaldson, Kershaw, and Scherzer. Hell, Nolan Arenado and Todd Frazier have become absolute studs as well.

I won't agree because I think I would still take Trout, but you can make a nice case for a handful of guys.

Theres this guy named Trout who also hits for average, power, steals bases, walks and plays excellent defense at 23 years old.

Harper's numbers pretty firmly exceed Trouts this year but this is the first year Harper has really lived up to the superstar hype....Trout's been doing it for 3 1/2 years now.

ETA: Not really trying to say one is better than the other. They're both great young players. Just throwing Trouts name in for the sake of discussion.

Right, and I agree that Trout is right there, too. Yes, he's been more productive before 2015, as you correctly point out.

But IMO, Harper is simply playing unreal right now. I have some concerns about this wheels going forward, but I just think he's become the best player TODAY.

So it only takes three months to be the best player in baseball?

No. That would be Paul Goldschmidt. He's on pace for 40 HRs, 30 stolen bases, has a batting average over .350, leads the league in walks and is a very good defensive player as well (#2 in RZR and OOZ and #1 in double plays turned by a 1B). Goldschmidt is the best player in baseball right now. Without him, the Diamondbacks would be the second worst team in baseball. Instead, they are hovering around .500 and are sort of in contention entirely due to Goldschmidt.

I think Harper can have a Griffey Jr. type of career. The swing is not as smooth, but at his age, he has the opportunity to put up big numbers.

Mmhmm. If you're trying to make the who's better argument between two studs like this, you have to take everything into account.

In the end, Trout is a five-tool guy who is the better person to have in the clubhouse. But Harper still belongs in your first-team All-MLB outfield.

Harper's AB's are ridiculous right now. It reminds me of watching Bonds in the early 2000's - either it's a ball or he swings.

It's approaching "walk the guy with nobody on and two outs" territory.

I would not go that far.

Harper in 2015 (74 games):

.337/.465/.702

Bonds from 2001-2004 (573 games):

I am going to include his annual slash line and a truly absurd stat from that season to highlight why Bonds played at an unparalleled level.

2001 - .328/.515/.863 with 73 bombs
2002 - .370/.582/.799 with a .544 wOBA and 244 wRC+
2003 - .341/.529/.749 with his "worst" year in this four stretch still featured a 10.2 fWAR
2004 - .362/.609/.812 with so many things I could say. Bonds got on base over 60% of the time wtf. He drew 232 walks including 120 INTENTIONAL WALKS and had a laughable BB/K of 5.66.

Don't get me wrong that Harper is a fricking stud, but 2001-2004 is the pinnacle of sporting achievement.

In 2004, Barry Bonds hit more homers than struck out. His walk rate was 37.6%.

Bonds drew more walks in 2004 (232) than Harper has drawn BB (214) + IBB (16) in his career. Bonds had 9 HBP in 2004 and Harper has 10 for his career.

In an average game for Bonds in 2004, he had .92 hits per game, 1.72 walks per game (not including HBP), and a third of his hits went for four bags.

I wish I could watch Bonds play again.

It's a matter of opinion. I would still take Trout over Harper anyway. He's still the better all around player than Harper is, at least for now.

Still Trout, he's a lot better defensively.

There's a lot of good runner up answers though. Harper, Stanton, Donaldson and Goldy all make very good cases.
