Best hitter...not best all around. His fielding is pedestrian at best.

I still think Trout is THE best. Best part...both are great & will only get better for the foreseeable future. It'll be fun to see where both go

Just happened to see this. Pretty good company.

Edit - picture didnt post, but Harper becamie only the 7th player, 22 or younger, to have at least 25 HR's at the half way point of the season. Others were A-Rod, Mel Ott, Killebrew, DiMaggio, Bench and Eddie Matthews.

but they'd be the two I'd argue about

I agree here... Harper is close though.... I worry about Harper and his injury issues in the future though........

Why? He had a knee injury 2 years ago. Last year he had a relatively freak thumb injury that required surgery. Nothing there even remotely points to him having injury problems going forward.

He has also said he is taking consideration into the game situation to how much effort he puts up. For example, not trying to stretch a double into a risk triple when winning and not crashing into the wall for a ridiculous catch attempt up 6 runs.

Harper is unreal this year. That being said, the under 30 crowd in the MLB is damn impressive right now.

Harper
Stanton
Trout
Goldschmidt
Bryant
Correa
Kipnis
Cain
Posey
Altuve
Machado
Arenado
Frazier
Pederson
Rizzo
McCutcheon

I'm sure I left some deserving players off, but the point being that the future is bright for MLB.

Agreed. It's good players like Trout, Harper, Goldy, Stanton, etc. came along.

However, to the OP, Harper is close, but he doesn't do the things defensively or on the base paths nearly as well as Trout does. Now he has just as good a bat, maybe better, but overall player? I will take Trout every single time.

Paul Goldschmidt. He's on pace for 40 HRs, 30 stolen bases, has a batting average over .350, leads the league in walks and is a very good defensive player as well

You can't be a first baseman and be a good defensive player.

Harper is having the best offensive season since Bonds, but I don't think you can put him over Trout yet.

Pederson

I am not impressed with a 239 hitter.....great defensively and he can hit for power. ....but 239 sucks....it's unfortunate Goldschmidt plays for such a shitty team and in the west coast time zone.

this isn't 1985 anymore, batting average is a useless stat. .378 OBP, .517 slugging......all while playing CF. Pederson is an absolute stud and the Dodgers MVP so far.

He's still young and in his first season(he did play 18 games last season, but you get my point), and like you said, has power, already 20 HRs. He is a strikeout machine, but has shown a great ability to get on base, 4th in MLB in walks, and 19th in OBP.

I don't think batting average is completely useless. I never reference it because there are better metrics with high correlation of offensive success, but it is not so bad that it is worth insulting people over.

I do think it is pretty much useless to judge players, and I think Pederson is a stud, but I definitely came off as a condesending dick there. I apologize for my tone and wording there.

I will only mention it in a triple slash line because it sometimes tells you about a hitter. Of course, I could check out his walk rate, but .250/.350/.500 describes a different batter than .300/.350/.500 even if they would provide similar value. It can have value in context.

Right now, yes. his offensive numbers out weigh any gap he and Trout have defensively.

id put Goldy second at the moment
