Update: Georgia confirms Brock Bowers will have surgery today "to stabilize the ankle and a full recovery is anticipated."

Georgia All-American Brock Bowers could be out the remainder of the regular season if doctors determine he needs TightRope surgery on his ankle.

Coach Kirby Smart said Saturday that an X-ray taken in Nashville was negative, but he also shared that further MRI testing was ahead for Bowers, leaving open a spectrum of possibilities.

The TightRope surgery, sometimes used with high ankle sprains, typically has much quicker recovery periods (4 to 6 weeks) and enables doctors to avoid have any complications with the use of screws.

It’s hard to imagine what a UGA offense would look like without Bowers, who is most often the central figure in opponents’ game plans.

Georgia quarterback Carson Beck said it would be next man up without Bowers, but Beck admitted “it does hurt to not have him out there,” and appeared to hold the ball more often in the second half without the familiar sight of No. 19 breaking open.

Sources have told @DawgsCentral_ that a doctor recommended Tightrope Surgery to UGA TE Brock Bowers and he will seek a second opinion before deciding a course of action on Tuesday. Full details were posted on our subscriber’s forum tonight…

He’s had a great college career. Gotta try to stay healthy to be wealthy coming up.

This sucks. Sounds like what Tua had. He came back but movement was limited. Can’t imagine an athletic TE having to deal with it.

It doesn't say he will have the surgery or even needs to have the surgery. Only if he does have the surgery that he will be out.

Tua played right on through that injury, even after surgery.

I think OM, Mizzu and Tenn will be challenges without Bowers

It’s the name of the device. What’s so shocking about that?

Are we just assuming GA will win the SEC?

The Tua that came back that season after the ankle injury was nowhere close to Tua pre-injury.

His footwork and confidence were way off and that's with a non-running QB.

Brock Bowers is an explosive TE who plays like a jumbo WR, its not the same situation at all.

I am. 100% to win the East. I don't think Bama has the depth or talent to beat them, and they certainly don't have the discipline. I think the conference belongs to UGA right now. Certainly they can lose but Kirby isn't really the complacent type.
