Aiken should have signed with the Astros. He was being offered millions and going to college only would potentially cost him more given that they would pitch him until his arm fell off.

He should lose his eligibility if he used Close as an advisor. He can sit out a year or sign with an independent minor league team.

A attorney wrote a good, and lengthy, summary of this mess on Baseball Prospectus.

I believe Donald Sterling still owns the Clippers.

Wouldn't an agent have replied with a counter?

Yeah, the Astros are hardly an organization people look to as a beacon of integrity and structure, but this one seems to be on Aiken and/or his agent. Seriously, why no counteroffer?

Is it not safe to assume that the 6.5m offer that was discussed was the expectation?

Seems like a lot is being made about him not countering the low ball offers and I don't really see why.

Aiken is and was never honoring that commitment to UCLA. He will sit out the year, maybe jc one year and reenter draft next year. His best option is he wins a grievance hearing, becomes a free agent immediately, and then can negotiate with any team on open market.

Bad advice in turning down the $5 million. May not ever see that again.
He would have at least gotten that.

Plus Close is the new Boras, looking for that loophole in the new CBA which hinders there ability to negotiate at draft time. Baseball is a crapshoot, all the draft players they are negotiating with may not pan out.

Because that's not how negotiations work. You don't just push away from the table when you hear a secondary number you dislike, especially when you're up against a deadline.

So you agreed to 6.5, they say UCL is too small, your camp disagrees that this is an issue, you expect 6.5 they offer you 3, then with 5 minutes left say 5 and because you don't say 'no 6.5' its on you?

You're right...if I don't believe it's an issue I never budge from the 6.5 previously agreed to.

I really can't believe this reached the level it did over 1.5 million bucks.
