Damnit Astros

Facebook subtitle**
quote:

In addition to revealing the Astros as shitty jerks, the Brady Aiken saga has also reminded the world of the existence of one of the NCAA's silliest and most farcical rules: players like Aiken aren't allowed to hire agents for MLB negotiating purposes if they want to retain collegiate eligibility. Thanks to the Astros' frickery—and, of course, the greater and more persistent frickery of the NCAA—there is a real chance that this rule could prevent Aiken from pitching at UCLA, where he committed before the draft.

quote:

Throughout his negotiations with the Astros, Aiken was assisted by Casey Close, a high-powered agent—he represents Clayton Kershaw and Derek Jeter—masquerading as an "adviser" for the sake of keeping up appearances. (In situations like this, everyone agrees to pretend that operators like Close are well-meaning friends of the family, something like an uncle who happens to have a background in negotiating nine-figure contracts with major league teams.) This is a charade in which almost every draft pick participates, and nobody gets in trouble unless someone goes tattling to the NCAA, as the Phillies despicably did after they failed to sign Ben Wetzler.

This is on the NCAA for being insanely inconsistent on where they turn a blind eye. But ya that certainly put gas in the dumpster

No Aiken has no one to blame but the Astros. They are professionals, they know how this works, you don't railroad a player because he is unhappy with your lowball injury number.

If he wanted above slot 1 that's one thing, but they drafted him, performed a physical, didn't like it and offered him sub slot money. Fine. But if the player doesn't like it, or thinks its bullshite don't try retribution.

Appel is a bust and the Astros can treat this draft as a waste, frick them, karma is a bitch and I hope they continue to carry the AL west basement

I guess I don't understand. His medicals weren't bad enough to not offer him 5 million but were bad enough to not offer 6.5. I mean really what's a million and a half to not have to defend the perception of the team.

Poor Brady, everyone is out to get him. First the Astros only offered him a couple hundred dollars and a one year supply of Minute Maid as a signing bonus, then the NCAA just created amateurism rules out of thin air and are only aiming them at him. The poor guy just can not catch a break.

No the NCAA rule for baseball players and "consultants" is absolutely retarded and any player punished for it is getting screwed.

Probably not. No one will ever want to sign with the Astros again. They're just too mean.

No, Aiken will never be drafted again because other GMs are followers of you and prom's posts.

Yes, because I've mentioned on so many occasions he wouldn't or shouldn't be drafted again.

I do wonder how many players in the Astros organization are lining up to file grievances after following posts on the board though. Some of the more informed posters here have decided Nix has a can't lose case and even Marshall has grounds to file.

Well making minor leaguers sign extensions before being called up should be looked at, agreed.

Yes, the Astros take their players hands and physically force them to sign exstensions.

The Astros are just evil, that's all there is to it. Next Friday they are having a slaughter a puppy promotion. Kids bring their childhood pets and Jeff Luhnow will take them all and throw them from the top of minute maid park.

Wouldn't an agent have replied with a counter?
