re: Bobcats want James Harden for #2 pickPosted by FourThinInches on 6/14/12 at 2:11 pm to alfredblueforheisman
Why should the Thunder want more than the 2nd pick? The guys contract is up after the Finals.... He's not going to resign with OKC. The guy can be a starter for ANY Team in the NBA why would he want to be a 6th man for a minimal salary, when he can make more as a starter for any team?
If OKC wins the title, I bet they do it. If they lose to the Heat, they may just hold on to Harden for the final year of his contract to try and make another run and then let the chips fall as they may after.
ETA: NVM, I thought Harden was signed through next year.

RFA. it's all but guaranteed some team will want to max him out, but that team may trade something of value back in the process.
also, I thought there was some tweak made to the Larry Bird rights in the CBA where it'd basically behoove Harden to be extended by his original team and traded. that may not have made it in though.

He's not a free agent after the finals. He's not even an unrestricted free agent NEXT summer, he'll be a rfa.

Disagree. I don't think they'll do it, but they definitely won't if they win a championship.

how is that an excellent point? you win the title, so you go trading one of your best players and mess with chemistry? unless I feel that Harden's gonna be a malcontent because of his contract, I'd try to keep my nucleus together for a repeat.

It's not the smartest move for chemistry but it's all about bringing in new meat.
Chances are, the OKC FO already has a pretty good idea on what they plan to do with Harden. If they don't plan on keeping, why not trade him for something valuable like the second pick instead of letting him walk for nothing?

With no clear #2 or team need at this point, this is probably what they will do. Long term it would probably be wiser to go ahead and deal him, but only if there is a definite pick/trade they have their eye on.

You have to plan ahead. Harden has zero chance of resigning with OKC. They need to think longterm.
Of the stars of their team, who is the one easiest to replace? Harden. And to that, Beal from Florida is a scorer who can probably come in and fill those shoes.
It's an interesting situation. Keep him and go for the repeat and risk getting NOTHING for him, or trade him for the #2 pick and take a player you think can replace him.

This. I can't see anyone at #2 that would greatly help this team out or make up for what you lose with Harden.
Scariest thing about the Thunder: They could have had Tyson Chandler the last two years instead of Perkins had he passed their physical

I work with the surgeon who didn't clear Chandler too
I'm still laughing about everyone just assuming Thunder FO and owners won't just say F IT and resign both Harden and Ibaka. Some big time deep pockets in that ownership group.

Meh, a bad year could ruin his value and a good year won't do much to increase his value.
While the Thunder would get his talents for a year, if they are not going to resign him, dealing him now makes the most sense when his value is at a maximum IMO.

It's going to come down to whether they want to keep Hardon or Ibaka long term.
And while Harden is the better overall player, OKC needs a frontcourt guy as part of this nucleus and Durant and Westbrook already demand the ball a lot as it to where a guy like Harden, as good as he is, can be considered surplus.

This is completely untrue, of course they have a chance of resigning him.
I think anyone who thinks Beal can replace Harden needs to compare their freshman years in college. Harden is on a different level from Beal. If they trade for the 2 pick, I'd say the clear choice for the Thunder would be Robinson. They can find a shooter to replace some of what Harden gave them.

no, it's about winning championships. and I feel like keeping Harden gives them a greater chance at that in 2013 than what a trade for the #2 pick might bring. of course, their FO may think differently (and somebody may make them a deal that makes sense).

no doubt there, Presti's wired that way.

see my above comment on winning rings.
also, I think the whole "lose him for nothing" talk can be overblown in certain instances, this being one. if he leaves but you got a ring or 2 with him, you got good value, you still have the core of a championship contender, life will go on. this ain't Durant leaving, or Shaq leaving Orlando.

if i were OKC, id try and deal westbrook, keep harden and max him out, and get a more traditional PG. but im also not much of a RW guy
