College football decision-makers have considered allowing some bowls to not be played this year given that not enough teams are eligible, Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby said Sunday.

Although bowls going dark seems unlikely to happen this season, there is deep frustration by some administrators within college football that teams with 5-7 records will be in the postseason. At least two 5-7 teams, and possibly up to five, would have to participate since there aren't enough 6-6 teams to fill the 80 slots created by a record 40 bowl games. About five cities have applied to stage future bowls.

“If we add more bowls next year, where are we going to find 84, 86, 88 eligible teams?” said Bowlsby, chairman of the Football Oversight Committee. “Having bowls go dark may be the way to slow the process down. There are a lot of people that don't even like 6-6, much less 5-7. There are people who absolutely want bowls to go dark.”

When asked if going dark is a viable possibility this season, Bowlsby replied, “The problem with them going dark is you don't end up with both sides (of the participating teams) not being filled. So you're penalizing a team that did everything it should.”

More football is better than less football.

Play the games.

But....MORE football.

That seems to be the comeback for irrational people when discussing why there are so many bowls featuring sub-par teams.

How many people actually watch the Birmingham Bowl? Give me a break. They should cut back the number of bowl games tremendously. 7-5 should be the minimum record to get into a postseason game because I really couldn't care less to watch two 6-6 teams fighting for a winning record. And yes, that includes my favorite team. When we went 6-6 in '07 I really had no desire to watch Saban and co. compete against Colorado for a 7-6 finish.

Should only be bowl games for teams that won championships... Whether it's division or league. Just going 6-6 and finishing 9th in the SEC shouldn't give you a bowl game.

So that means 2 teams per conference gets tickets to a bowl. Then tie in the independents somehow haha.

I'd agree, but I'll bet you have some fun loving fan tards tell you how great the GoDaddy Bowl is on a Sunday Night late in the bowl season.

no need to be a homer about anything.

our bowl game is crap.

How? You're getting extra football. Bowl season gives you matchups you generally wouldn't see otherwise.

There is the, "well they didn't earn a bowl!" argument but honestly who cares?

Bad extra football.

I want good extra football. Of the 40 bowls that will be played this postseason I will likely only watch 15 of them.

like what?

South Alabama vs. Bowling Green last year.

MacNation vs. the Fun Belt... they lined up for miles in good ole Montgomery to see that one. LOL

see, all of you ripped that game last year so don't try and bullshite me.

all I read here was.. oh wow what a boring game... the game is being played on a high school field... why are they showing this game... where is Bowling Green? where is South Alabama and blah blah fricking blah.

I can't disagree though. I don't like it but I agree there are too many bowl games.

30 bowls would give college football roughly the same ratio of teams in the postseason as the the NFL playoffs. That should be the cap, but I think it should be even lower.

It'll never happen, but I'd love it if teams were required to go 8-4 or better. Get it down to like 16 total bowls, where each matchup is comprised of good teams. That would be outstanding IMHO.

ESPN is who is driving these new bowls. They own them, and playing them on a random Tuesday in the middle of December gets them a lot better rating than say playing a repeat of the World Series of Poker or a repeat 30 for 30. It wont stop until the higher ups in college football finally say no to their overlords in Bristol.

I know personally that if I am home on a random night during the week in December, and a bowl game is being played(even if its Akron vs South Alabama), Im much more likely to watch that than something else on tv, and I know Im not the only one.

There shouldn't be 40 bowl games. That's dumb.
