Your choices:
Don Mattingly
Matt williams
Robin Ventura
Brad Ausmus
Joe Girardi
Paul Molitor
Mike Scioscia
AJ Hinch
Bob Melvin
Lloyd McClendon
Jeff Banister
Craig Counsell
Chip Hale
walt weiss
Mike Matheny

All of these current managers played during the 90's.... who is the best current manager of this group? Is it Matheny in St. Louis, what about what Molitor has done with the Twins, or Girardi with the Yankees. what about Scioscia who is 16 years in or what Hinch has done in Houston.

Probably Mike Scioscia or Matheny. I have no doubt that Molitor will be successful in Minnesota. Just his first season though.

Former catchers usually have great success managing.

AJ Hinch is doing a hell of a job. Sciosicia is generally the most highly regarded on that list, though.

Chip Hale in time. Former Twin that comes from the same mold as Tom Kelly and Gardenhire. Players love playing for him same as Kelly/Gardy.

Matt Williams

I'd probably vote for Girardi as best, but judging manager performance is far from an exact science. I could be way wrong.

Depends on how you want to look at Girardi, he did a fine job with a Marlins team that wasn't supposed to compete and then took over a Yankees team at the opposite end of the spectrum. They are supposed to be "old" and fade near the end but each year he has had the team in the hunt late into the season.

I like Scioscia and 16 years says a lot about him.

i think the jury is out on Ventura. He was supposed to be a really smart baseball guy. His team isn't exactly well built, imo.

His first year he had them in the hunt and they surprised a lot of people

I think Ausmus will be better at his second gig.

In terms of pure managing ability, I believe Bob Melvin's the best out of that bunch. The 2007 Diamondbacks had no business winning 90 games yet they won that many games because of how well Bob Melvin managed the bullpen that year. The A's have exceeded expectations almost every year under Melvin.

He is in a tough situation... Tigers were supposed to be contenders and because of injuries and inconsistency they became sellers. Next year they won't be any better either, Miggy will eventually fall off and when that happens it will get ugly while they pay Verlander 26 million for a 5+ ERA

What kind of situation did Scioscia step into in Anaheim? I know he came in after Terry Collins but can't remember what kind of team they had.

Matheny walked into a great club with an excellent farm system. Girardi took over the Yankees, who are always going to be competitive. Just wondering what the landscape looked like for Scioscia

Matheny seems like a terrible tactical manager, but that is only so much a part of it and we really have no way to measure the rest. So I definitely wouldn't vote for him, but I can see why someone would.

I don't watch really any Cardinals baseball unless they are playing Chicago or are the late game, so I can't speak about his tactics. I do know he has had a ton of success his first few years there though.
