Ball is slow footed; can't break his man down for a jump shot; can't defend; is not explosive. He is a great passer.

How can you argue?
Ball: 10-0-8 with 2 blocks
Fox: 39-1-4 with 2 steals.

I've been harping on Fox for the last week and only a few listened. Fox develops an outside jump shot he will be lethal as any guard in the NBA today.

I think Ball is an exceptional talent. His passing instincts are Randy Livingston/Jason Kidd like and he's a better shooter than either was at this stage IMHO.

It's a shame his Dad's idiotic antics compromise and compound any hint of struggles he has.

There aren't many players that can stay in front of Fox. That kid has elite quickness and burst.

This.

Lonzo is a better shooter than where Kidd was at the same age.

So a playmaking point guard does not translate well to the NBA game?

Gotcha

Ball probably should have had about 12 assists, his team couldn't handle a couple passes and failed to convert super easy baskets.

He is going to be a really good PG

This was the major red flag from last night to me.

You sound just like the resident "NBA expert" at Hogville that swore up and down that BJ Young was going to be an NBA player

Congrats to you and HH on bringing up basically the only 2 half-way decent shooters in modern NBA history with such shitty shooting motions.

You can see why this is a red flag.

quote:

But he doesn’t have many other shots off the dribble in his arsenal. Of his 53 attempts, 26 of them were step-backs, 17 were dribbling going toward his left, and 10 were straight pull-ups. None came going toward his right.

quote:

I asked NBA skills trainer Drew Hanlen if he had any thoughts on Ball’s shooting form. “Kevin Martin is the only cross-ball, low-release shooter that got decent results in the NBA,” Hanlen texted me. I brought up Shawn Marion, and was quickly shut down: Hanlen brought up the fact that Marion shot only 33.1 percent from 3 over his career and never had a single season over 40 percent. Touché. Martin was a career 38.4 percent shooter from 3 and scored over 20 points per game for five consecutive seasons. But Martin was the exception to the rule with his side-winding mechanics. He was also a different player than Ball?—?Martin was a wing, while Ball is a pure point?—?but it is curious how there’s no other modern example of a knockdown shooter with quirky mechanics.

Kidd had a physicality to him that Ball lacks. Ball is more finesse. His ugly jumper is more effective than a young Kidd. Odds are he falls well short of the player Kidd was.

I like Ball, and I think he'll be at least a solid NBA player because of his feel for the game, passing ability, and ability to knock down open jumpers.

I do question his ceiling. It's tough to be an NBA superstar when you aren't great at either getting your own shot or defending the guy in front of you.

in a league that is dominated by pick and roll, ball's mid range pick and roll game is non existent. his shooting motion makes pulling up on a pick and roll impossible. the adjustment that UK made was to simply switch everything, if you stick with him he can't get his shot off.

quote:

This is huge. Guess how many 2-point jump shots Lonzo Ball has made this season. That means a shot that isn't a 3-pointer, layup or dunk. Go ahead, think about it ... we have time. Alright, that's enough, you'll never get it.
Two.
According to Hoop-Math.com, Ball has made just two shots in 22 games so far this season that weren't 3s or dunks. And he has only attempted 11 of them. Eleven!
While you pick your jaw up off the floor, let's examine what that means. Some might tout the stat as a sign that Ball is ready for the modern NBA, a paragon of the Daryl Morey/Stephen Curry nature of a league where 3s reign supreme and we scoff at low-percentage 2-point jump shots.
That all makes sense except for one thing -- NBA point guards still take, and make, a lot of 2-point shots. Here's a list of point guards in the NBA that attempt three or more mid-range shots per game (outside the paint and inside the 3-point line): Russell Westbrook, John Wall, Kyrie Irving, Chris Paul, Derrick Rose, Eric Bledsoe, Damian Lillard, Kemba Walker ... the list goes on.
Even 3-happy Steph Curry attempts more than 2.5 mid-range shots per game. This would be a good time to remind you that Lonzo Ball has only attempted 11 mid-range jumpers ALL SEASON. That's one every two games.
So what? Who cares if he doesn't shoot long 2s?
Well, think about this: Pick-and-rolls account for a larger percentage of NBA offense every year. The purpose of the pick-and-roll (or pick-and-pop) is to force the defense to make decisions and rotate. When a point guard comes off the screen he has three choices -- pass, drive or shoot.
If Lonzo Ball refuses to shoot off a pick-and-roll unless he's behind the 3-point line, that means the defense can be slower with its rotations, or just send the guard over the screen and have the big man drop since they know Ball is not going to take, or make, a pull-up mid-range shot. That's exactly what happens to Kyrie Irving in this clip (the guard goes over the screen to take away the 3 and the big man drops into the paint), but Irving is an adept mid-range shooter and makes the easy pull-up.

it's a legit concern. which is why i said his game doesn't translatee to the modern nba as well as it looks .his pnr game is non existant and wont' ever be unless he cahnges his shot and he's not like russs where he can just get to the rim at will

Ball reminds me a lot of Shaun Livingston with a jumper and pre injury Shaun Livingston was sick. He's never going to be good defensively but if you surround him with the right players he won't be a liability
