So will Kirby beat Bama or win a natty before Harbaugh beats OSU? Which one, if either, gets it done first?

Federer lost to Nadal in the French Open finals 3 times before he beat a guy who wasn't Rafa so maybe that doesn't count

It’s a tournament. You beat who is in front of you. Trust me, his title still “counts”

Made the bigs in 1994, won in 2009

Same could be asked of Brian Kelly and Lincoln Reilly. Both can’t get over the first CFP game hump despite multiple attempts to do so

Dr. Tom at Nebraska. Couldn't win the big ones until he started recruiting the thugs like Phillips and Peter*.

1973-2007

Tom Osborne finished in the AP Top 10....18 times in 24 years and only won 3 Titles, one was a split and the other was dubious (1994 Penn State).

His bowl record was 12-13. From 1987 to 1993 he lost 7 straight bowl games. A change needed to be made and we all know what happened. Enter 1994-1997 Nebraska football.

no titles without a stacked loaded team.

LBJ also had to face a lot of super teams.

And it's not like Jordan didn't require his own help before he started winning titles.

The only Finals loss that is actually a thorn in the side of James' legacy was his first year in Miami when they lost to Dallas.

Who are some memorable coaches or athletes that had the reputation of failing in their most important games or events until they finally broke through and won and silenced the doubters?

LeBron is the easiest answer here.

David Price also came to mind. He had a reputation as a legendary playoff choke artist and then suddenly was unhittable in the 2018 playoffs.

Bob Stoops is kind of the opposite. He earned the nickname Big Game Bob early in his tenure at OU, but it became a joke by the end.

Dale Earnhardt raced the Daytona500 19 times before finally winning on the 20th try. It was a big deal at the time that he finally got that monkey off his back.

Then Daytona beat him for good three years later.

I would throw Andre Agassi in there. Was the next big thing for several years but couldn’t quite get over the hump in majors. Made semis a few times and finals a couple of times at the French and US Opens and came up short before breaking through vs. Goran Ivanisevic at Wimbledon in 1992. One of my all-time favorites and had a whale of a career, but if he had put it all together earlier, would’ve had as many slams as Sampras.

As a program, this was Clemson football for about three decades. Now Georgia wears that dubious crown.
