Rogers Redding is retired

If Alabama was in the field, Mike Slive and Rodgers Redding would have already issued a statement in support of the ruling.
sometimes I almost forget I'm on an LSU-based site

That's almost as bad as the 2006 LSU/Auburn game.
But Chris Perez is on my fantasy team so this blown call got me a save.

A lot of times there is discussion that the umps don't have the same angles that are shown by the broadcast teams. Has anyone ever addressed why they don't have the ability to get those angles when making their calls? It seems like a no brainer that they could feed those angles and shots in as needed if the call was still inconclusive.

Each ump has their own responsibilities and I think the field umpire had no choice at the time but to call it a double given his angle on the play. It looked like a double in real time, even at an angle. However, I have no clue what he was thinking on the replay review...must have had $ on the game. That was awful.

Ya it did, but one look at the replay and it was clearly a HR.
I cant wait for the Tribe to trade Perez.

Typically both home and away teams (if both are broadcasting) have their own production crews who can run zooms, replays, etc. The visiting team's production crew may not be at the site, but back at their home production facility It may be that the A's production team had a feed coming from Cleveland back to Oakland, and then from the Oakland facility they zoomed it and pushed it back on the A's feed. If so, MLB would not have had access to that.
Also, I seem to remember hearing/reading somewhere that one of the replay rules (can't remember if it is MLB, NFL, NHL or NCAA) doesn't allow for zoomed in/enhanced views. They may be able to slow the replay down, but they have to use the standard view.
Either way that was a horrible call. At the same time, when you desing parks, why build them so that something like that can happen? Move that railing back a few feet and it more likely than not wouldn't have happened. Build a small gap between the outfield wall and the stands and you don't have balls bouncing back, they will more often than not fall in the gap.

Randy Marsh, the MLB supervisor of Umpires, flew to Cleveland to watch the A's and Indians game today. MLB is expected to release a statement on the call later today.
Also the reason Melvin was ejected is because the rulebook says so. Once you have asked for replay, you cannot argue or protest the call after that.

I don't think it did. It was clear as day IMO...I couldn't figure out why he stopped at second and didnt even make a case for himself..

You watched the game?
Posted on 5/9/13 at 11:48 am to PJinAtl
They can zoom, ask for them to circle the ball, and use all replay angles provided by the teams' feeds

Yeah, I have a couple fantasy players on those teams. I just happened to have it pulled up on my iPad while watching basketball games. shitty that it even came to that. Had they not thrown the ball away on a fairly routine double play it wouldn't have mattered. But I digress. I thought it was a homerun, I thought it actually hit the fan at first glance.
