Not against the rules.

I assume you mean fielder, and it isn't against the rules either.
quote:
They slide before the bag and then into the bag
Yes, they are required to by the rules...if not it is illegal. However, the rules do not state where exactly before the bag the slide must begin.
quote:
not sliding directly on top and into the runner
Again assuming you mean fielder and again it isn't against the rules to slide into them if they are in the baseline.

But you must avoid contact with the fielder if possible. It was possible, he intentionally hit the fielder, thus he is out.
Really an easy call.

According to you, but not the rules.

According to the rule page 80
If the runner attempts to dislodge the ball or initiates an
avoidable collision, the runner shall be declared out
(3) The runner must attempt to avoid a collision if he can reach the base
without colliding
Again you are considered to have 3 paths to the base
a----------------
b---------------
c---------------
In this case b and c were occupied, thus the runner needs to take a to avoid collision. The runner chose b/c therefore in violation of the rule.
The diagram is on page 76.
Also they showed another angle replay on ESPN. The runner was out about 4-5 steps before the bag meaning he no longer had a right to the bag which makes the contact even worse.

Sorry, I'm on the "LSU as the only national seed in Omaha" train.

I want a TCU/LSU championship series.

I'm really confident in LSU right now tbh.
They honestly seem to be playing better than anyone.

Yeah a lot of national and regional seeds aren't looking great.

This was an obvious screwing.
What the GIF does not show, is the entire play as well.
The runner at first was going to be safe by a mile, even if the throw goes off without a hitch. That was the game winning play and TCU knew it. Look at their fielders. They knew their only hope of the game continuing was the ump gifting them yet another call (they got one in the 9th too).
They got their wish.
Oh well. It is college baseball. At the end of the day, no one will care about lowly Sam Houston State. If this was LSU, UT or another marquis baseball program, it would be a bigger story.

Once again, you quote this rule and leave out the key part. "If the defensive player blocks the base (plate) or base line with clear possession of the ball, the runner may make contact, slide into or make contact with a fielder as long as the runner is making a legitimate attempt to reach the base (plate)."
quote:
The diagram is on page 76.
The diagram on page 76 shows where the defender is protected. And if you're trying to use this as your point
" Exception—A runner need not slide directly into a base as long as the runner slides or runs in a direction away from the fielder to avoid making contact or altering the play of the fielder. Interference shall not be called."
It refers to what a runner can do if they choose not to slide directly into the base. You have to understand the context. The force play slide rule says they must slide directly into the base or be called for interference. This exception allows them to get out of the baseline as long as they aren't going out of the baseline to make contact. This is in place so they can avoid being hit in the face by the throw to first in case they aren't close enough to the base to slide. It does not say they must veer out of the baseline.

It's 9:45 am CST....
...and TCU still won the game.

Just found the play, that's a terrible call. The guy slides directly into the base and the 2nd baseman is standing there flat footed like a moron. What's the runner supposed to do not slide into the base? If the 2nd baseman knew how to field his position this wouldn't have been an issue. You're supposed to learn how to avoid that in like 5th grade

The gif is on page 18. Looks like the runner initiated contact with a fielder to me, and it's pretty significant contact. I can't blame an ump for calling that an illegal slide.
I didn't watch the game and I don't much like TCU, but that call is hardly outrageous.
