And by failed I do mean miserably. Easy to win when you out talent everyone. Bill Belichicks and Pete carrols of the world think nothing of him, and rightfully so.

How successful were they at their first NFL head coaching jobs?

At least they were man enough to try again. Nick Saban is the kid who plays video games on easy and thinks he's hot shite

You know Belichick and Saban often meet on a yearly basis for a weekend during Summer and discuss X and Os and watch film?

He wasn't terrible. His first season he went 9-7 and barely missed the playoffs. Overall he was 15-17 in two seasons.
He wasn't exactly coaching the New England Patriots... the Dolphins were 4-12 before Saban took over. He made a terrible team average.
And honestly, his hard-nosed coaching style probably doesn't work as well with paid professionals.

Without Brady Belicheck sucked.
If Saban got Brees he'd probably still be in the NFL.

It didn't work. You get the feeling that they didn't respect him very much.

In “organized team activities” (OTAs) that spring, Saban had the entire team line up for sprints. He blew his whistle, and everyone took off ... except for Keith Traylor, a nose tackle who weighed at least 350 pounds. According to some of his teammates, Traylor—then a 14-year NFL veteran and winner of three Super Bowls—had a clause in his contract that relieved him of conditioning duties. So, instead of sprinting with the rest of the team, Traylor set off on a leisurely jog. When he realized that Saban was eyeing him, Traylor began to taunt him, yelling, “Hey, Nick! Hey, Nick!” Traylor knew, as the rest of his teammates did, that Saban hated being called “Nick” by his players. He wanted them to address him as “Coach” or “Coach Saban,” just as his college players always had.

Traylor kept yelling, “Hey, Nick!” Finally, Saban snapped and told him to shut the hell up and run.
Traylor responded: “Who the f*%& do you think you’re talking to?” and ambled over to the sideline and stood and watched as his teammates ran their sprints.
quote:
Thomas, because of his experience and talent, was a leader on the defense. He got a kick out of occasionally switching a Saban-called play in the defensive huddle, something his coach had begun to notice. Saban’s face contorted into rage when he heard Thomas yelling. He stopped practice and ran over to Thomas and told him to “shut the f^*% up.” Thomas told Saban to “shut the f%&^ up” right back, then yelled, “I’m a grown-arse man!”

I hate the success he's having at BAMA from purely an envious standpoint. But this is a stupid thread.
Didn't he go 8-8 in his first year following some terrible seasons in Miami? And to think, if he had NOT listened to his training staff and picked Drew Brees, he's probably riding a pretty successful career in South Beach.

No, I find it depressing cause other wise he might still be there
However, he was 9-7, 6-10. While clearly not great, it's hardly miserable failure. He was not fired, something Carroll and Belichick can not say.

Pete Carroll only left USC because they were about to get hit with a ton of sanctions.

No, there are kids who brag about how great they are at a game. Nick Saban is the kid who comes over and beats the crap out of the kid who thought he was good.
He has a career record of 204-60-1 with 5 national titles. He is 118-18 at Alabama.
He doesn't think he's hot shite, he had proven that he IS hot shite.
He has already staked a spot along the all-time great coaches (Rockne, Osborne, Hayes, Bowden, Bryant). Simply put, Saban is a legend.

OP is right but he could have worded it more maturely.
Saban is the best recruiter to ever live. His success is rooted in the simple fact that he has all the best players year after year. There's no arguing against that.
