The quote I read was Phil saying that the Saudis were responsible for Khashoggi‘s death and that they were a bunch of crazy MFers.
I thought it was odd considering he was trying to get this golf league off of the ground with them.

The Saudis have probably paid Phil an absolute fortune to stump for them. Probably way, way more than any US sponsor will pay.

Cancel him or not, he can go play at some Saudi event 5x a year for life and get paid 8-figures.

It's exactly what Vince McMahon has been doing for years with WWE. They want world class events in their country and money is unlimited, so Western companies and athletes are going to keep going.

It's no different that what all these other athletes and leagues (specifically the NBA) do with China..
But honestly, in the grand scheme of things, Saudi Arabia, to me, is the less evil of the two... and that's quite remarkable.

Phil was in a dispute with the PGA Tour over certain issues he feels that the marquee players have been given the short end of the stick on.

I think he was using the Saudi Tour as leverage against the PGA Tour. Phil helped spearhead about 10-15 big names to threaten to leave for the other Tour (more like “big names who used to be top 10 players but aren’t any more”).

This was a two year process, that for reasons I can’t figure out, all blew up this week. My guess is that it was because Phil gave an interview in which he let it slip that he was bluffing, and that comment became public this week.

Phil is likely being suspended by the Tour, as Phil announced today he is taking a break from golf to refocus on what’s important. But I can’t see anyway whatsoever that Phil isn’t teeing it up at Augusta National this April as the reigning PGA Champion.

Phil has made a mess of this, we’ll see if he can bounce back. Not so much playing wise, just popularity wise with the fans and his fellow competitors on the tour.

Phil isn’t being canceled for saying anything good or bad about the Saudi’s, he’s being canceled by the golf world for almost pulling some star players to another tour that would compete with the PGA and European Tours.

He did this to himself. You can't say that.

Sounds like he said this to someone in confidence and they exposed it.

This thing is starting to blow up in Phil’s face in spectacular fashion. He can still save face if he wants and admit he screwed up and wants to work with the PGA to improve things or whatever. But he’s had a rough few weeks reputation wise.

Funny thing is, the stars on Tour have had 2 years to come out and pledge their allegiance to the PGA and European Tours and almost none of them have until this week.

Whatever happened this week seemed to be the straw that broke the camels back and all of the sudden everyone came out saying “I love the PGA Tour and we never think about leaving.”

Some names assumed to be leaving for the Saudi Tour until this past week:

Phil Mickelson
Dustin Johnson
Bryson Dechambeau
Justin Rose
Ian Poulter
Lee Westwood
Henrik Stenson
Jason Kokrak

There were allegedly 17-20 names ready and they were waiting to get 20 to make the announcement together.

The overlap between the people defending Phil Mickelson w Saudi Arabia and constantly defending Lebron w China is baffling to me.

How is Phil defendable at this point?

Alan Shipnuck, the journalist. Shipnuck says that Phil agreed to the interview for the book Shipnuck is writing about Phil. Apparently this happened a while back, but the Saudi quotes were just released this week. Maybe it was to blow up the plans, I don’t know.

Shipnuck has said that at no point in the conversation did Phil say this is off the record. And there was never any indication that it was off the record.

Shipnuck himself thinks Phil may have wanted those comments eventually released.

It’s all a big cluster right now.

How is the pga cancelling him?
That doesn't make sense.

If what he said never came out he wouldn't have had to "step away".

He supposedly said that to someone in private and they came out with the story.

not true. It's the biggest source of this fight. The Tour makes huge money and most doesn't go to the players.

Yeah I’m sure a few guys threw Mickelson under the bus to save their own arse, and I don’t blame them.

Phil should have known that would happen.

He said it *allegedly* on the record in an interview for an excerpt of his book and the author shared it on a podcast

The PGA has released statements in the past that anyone joining the Saudi Tour would be banned from the PGA for life.

This topic of the Saudi league (actually only four events in Saudi Arabia, and 10 in the USA. Get this, Trump courses that the PGA abandoned to be woke could be used) has been going on for a good year or two. The Saudis have no shortage of money and are trying to pay the players 8 figure payouts to play in these events, win or lose.

No, it’s so much worse.

SGL has supposedly been recruiting PGA players for awhile now. SGL is backed by the Saudi Government. Phil has been a huge critic of the tour and has long been rumored to be their big get. Dustin Johnson and Bryson Dechambeau also were rumored to be in.

Phil goes on a nonsense rant last week about the PGA full of stuff that essentially is impossible to be true. That in itself is t crazy for Phil. Where it got interesting is he gave an interview to reporter where he basically called bullshite on all the stuff he had been saying, stated he was just trying to get leverage on the PGA, and called the Saudis genocidal maniacs. That broke shortly after.

So now Phil is likely going to be suspended from the PGA, his sponsors are bailing, and I’m sure the Saudis are going to want whatever cash he’s gotten from then back. Add to it that Phil is reported to have a serious gambling debt and is essentially about to be unemployed.

My understanding (from hearing the journalist talk about it) was that the interview took place a while back. The book will be released in a couple of months, but they decided to release a few quotes, which helps drum up interest in the book.

I wonder if the PGA knew of the quotes (Phil claiming to be bluffing) and they wanted it released to the public to blow up the chances of the Saudi Tour happening.
