In the latest bad sign, Simmons delivered his signature opening monologue off-camera on Wednesday’s night’s Episode 6. Uh-oh. It could be minor. Or it could be major. But that's usually a sign the talent is uncomfortable on the air, or that the show-runners don't think the person is good on TV.

UPDATE: HBO responded to our Bill Simmons column by stating "Any Given Wednesday" drew 247,000 viewers Wednesday night in its 10 p.m. ET time slot. That was the show's second-largest viewership since 362,000 for Cuban and Malcolm Gladwell in Episode 2, according to an HBO spokesman. The show is averaging a total of 2.4 million weekly views across all platforms, he said, including TV airings, DVR playbacks and HBO Go. By comparison, Maher averages 4.4 million.

Simmons is not a good TV personality. That was proven when he was on NBA Countdown

I find it really hard to watch. It really does just feel like a podcast.

I find it has too much stuff going on for a 30min show

I liked the stripped down style of Roy Firestone's old show much better

I believe his podcast has greatly suffered from focusing on this show. Really can't remember the last time I've listened to it. While at the Mothership, I listened every Monday or when he dropped a new one

Yeah, you've got to go to a Tom Snyder type format… just a simple interview… thats it.

Simmons can't carry a show as a host… he's just writer/podcaster

I think it's a good show, I like Simmons and he's interesting. The show is a little schitso and he doesn't talk sports nearly enough. I'd love to see it be an hour long and throw more sports talk into it.

Watched the first 3 episodes. Liked them. Guests were funny, insightful, great. And for some reason, I never has the urge to watch again.

I think it's because it needed to be a 2 hour long podcast. I would enjoyed that much more than the little bit that we get with the show.

It appears to be basically half-assed, but I stopped watching after the second episode. Simmons is robbing HBO blind.

That's been my major complaint too. He's had incredible guests but we only get like 3 minutes of them because he's trying to fit too much shite in. 30 minutes with Ricky Williams would have been awesome.

That's basically all there is to it.

Start the show with a rant. Then he needs to sit down with one great guest podcast style. Splice in the appropriate video highlights that fit. Then save a few minutes at the end so he can make a Wager of the Week on an actual game or general (funny) prediction that something will or won't happen.

They want you to use HBOGO to get the extras footage instead of just making it a 45 min show and spreading it out a bit

There are two main problems with Simmons.

Firstly, he is terrible on TV and has been for years, as evidenced by his stint on NBA Countdown and some of his appearances on late night TV.

Secondly, he's really gone off the rails since his departure from ESPN, especially as far as the Deflate-gate stuff and forced Boston tribalism goes.

He's always been a pretty good podcaster because he gets good guests and he's a semi-decent interviewer when he's not going down a rabbit hole and can stay on topic.

There are a lot of things ESPN does wrong, but it's starting to become apparent that ESPN did a good job of keeping him reigned in. Also, some of his gripes about ESPN not being committed to Grantland are pretty ridiculous considering the fact that their masthead included more than 60 writers and contributors and their payroll was extremely high considering the fact they were essentially a loss leader boutique site.

The biggest thing is that the show still feels kind of rinky-dink...Like it doesn't belong on HBO with the likes of Game of Thrones, Sopranos, and such.

It's not a guest panel talk show like Dennis Miller or Maher had, it's not really a comedy show, it's not even really a sports show with many of the guests he's had on recently.

He's also quota filling, you can tell, he always has to have on a white guest and a black guest... Just get the ONE guest and be done with it.

It needs to be the Bill and Sal show. I'd listen to those two for hours.
