Tim Bontemps Tim Bontemps @TimBontemps The Minnesota Timberwolves announce Andrew Wiggins has signed his contract extension. Presumably a five-year max deal worth $148 million.
Boy I hope his game is improved with Butler playing along side him.

as always, let's see the guaranteed money

This dude was billed as one of the greatest prospects ever. Still have not seen him live up to it yet. I know it's only year 4 but I'm not buying his hype.

This isn't the NFL. Embiid was a very unique exception to the norm.

If his game doesn’t expand, this could be wasted money

He’s still not even 23years old and has averaged over 20ppg for his career. No brainer for Minnesota IMO.
I get what some people are saying, and I would like to see him be more active on rebounds and get more assists and play harder at times. But he is still really young and clearly a huge part of the future of Minnesota, along with KAT and Jimmy B. And hes not nearly a finished product yet.
And if you’re Minny, you’d rather lock him up for the future right now then when his contract is up and can test free agency. Lock him up now and then lock up KAT next year.

Best move for Andrew Wiggins. This was offered to him in August and the most-secure way to lock a max contract down, but he was likely to see the same next summer, anyway.
Minnesota is investing in a 22-year-old that has averaged 20+ points/game over the last two seasons and led the league in minutes played during the 2016-17 season.

Looks like way too much now for sure, but the odds are it'll be a good deal in the last 2-3 years

Its the NBA. All 148 million is guaranteed.

He's a guy that needs to find his niche. More than likely will be a better player over the course of his second contract

Seriously, these dudes are acting like he's some scrub. He's a 22 year old that just averaged 24 points a game

He's a less prolific, taller Michael Jordan with underwhelming defensive ability(what's new? No one can play defense anymore with the hand checking prohibition and all these rules to enable prolific offensive production existing so developmental levels simply don't emphasize it too much) I like this max extension and I like this player

Ugh. I had high hopes for Wiggins but don't think he's worth this.
I know he puts up stats but isn't efficient at it. Good fantasy player, not as good of a real player.

He might literally be the worst defensive player in the NBA.

He’s a terrific player at this point of his career, but to me it’s the inconsistent jump shooting and average-below average defensive play that’s hindering him from becoming an All-Star caliber player. Now, he has the opportunity to pattern his game from one of the top 2 way players in the league (Butler).
And I do understand that in today’s NBA he was gonna get that type of money regardless with the way the Cap is structured, so it might as well be from Minnesota.

Its the kind of deal that has to be done by NBA teams.
Is he worth-worth it? Probably not. Will it be an egregious overpay on the back end? Definitely not.
It might be an overpay, sure, but you are also getting the athletic prime and a realistic development hope for a guy who already has a top level skill set, even if not fully realized on the court yet.
Defensively, he's no longer stuck in the duty of defending the other team's best player. In small ball lineups, he may even see situations where he's defending the 3rd best player on the court. That should make a ton of difference in how efficient he is on that end.
Even if he stays the exact same player he is now, a 24 PPG scorer. This is a league where one note guys can command $23M a season currently. He might be overpaid, but so are a lot of people.

Isn't this the cat the Cleveland drafted and then traded for Love?
