American Journalist Grant Wahl dead at World Cup

Influential U.S. soccer journalist Grant Wahl died in Qatar while covering the World Cup, his brother announced. He was 48.
While covering Argentina’s quarterfinal win over the Netherlands on Friday, Wahl, who had run his own Substack after working for Sports Illustrated, collapsed at Lusail Iconic Stadium and was rushed to a nearby hospital but passed away. It’s unclear whether he died at the hospital or in transport.
His brother, Eric, believes foul play may have been involved.
Earlier in the tournament, Wahl was accosted by Qatari authorities for wearing a rainbow shirt to show support for the LGBT community. Same-sex relationships are illegal in Qatar.
“My name is Eric Wahl. I live in Seattle, Washington. I am Grant Wahl’s brother. I’m gay,” he said in a video posted to his Instagram account. “I’m the reason he wore the rainbow shirt to the World Cup. My brother was healthy. He told me he received death threats. I do not believe my brother just died. I believe he was killed. And I just beg for any help.”
One of his last posts on the site was about the death of a migrant worker in Qatar during the World Cup and the indifferent reaction of Qatari authorities.

He was also literally writing govm't hit pieces while he was in Qatar as well, specifically about all the migrant worker deaths and how the nation didn't care about them.

This is why you don’t poke the bear. Don’t go into someone else’s home and talk shite about their way of doing things, regardless of your personal feelings. What do these athletes and journalists think will result from exposing Qatar as some country led by authoritarian pricks that don’t agree with the Western way?
