That is not true. Some people play better when all of the pressure is on and some play worse.

It might be different in other sports but there's absolutely no proof that some players can increase their skill level in a key situation

Baseball writers always try to be the smartest in the room. This is why Mike Trout was in such contention last year. In their defense, they seem to research extensively.

I think that the opposite is true most of the time.

Example: LINK

Mike Trout was the best player in the league last year. I understand giving Cabrera the MVP...he was the best hitter.

His team also made the playoffs, which for some reason is a qualification for some for an individual award.

Play or watch sports long enough and I'd say it's pretty obvious. Some people are just better when all of the lights and pressure are on them.

From every "high stakes" athletic competition I ever competed in, I believe there is no way to perform better at late, game-changing moments.

However, people can mentally crack under the pressure. There is definitely a major mental aspect to all sports. There are chokers, but not clutch performers. Those who are labeled as clutch are merely those who keep doing the same shite they have done all game.

That's pretty much how I see it. Not necessarily performing better, but just not letting the pressure affect your game in those situations.

Well that's pretty much what I meant. When I said better I meant they performed better than others in those situations. Specifically those who choke.

This. NOT letting the pressure get to you is being 'clutch'.

Have you seen guys like Allen Craig and Miguel cabrera's batting average with runners on base this year?

Their batting averages are fricking sick in all situations.

Miggy could hit anything even with a handle of Jack in the on-deck circle.

Sure their averages are sick in all situations

But you said guys can't turn it up, and clearly both guys have this year. It's not really a fluke after 130 games.

Maybe they can't do it over a whole career, but my main shot was at the guy that said there is no proof guys can perform better

Allen Craig is a normal .306 hitter for his career.

but he has hit .392 with RISP

just random and flukey, i guess.

Cabrera, .321 career hitter

his average jumps to .336 with RISP

his OPS goes from .970 to 1.003

Thoughts?
