After not being the #1 overall pick, Geno Smith fires his agents

quote:

Liz Mullen of Sports Business Journal reports that Smith fired Select Sports, the agency representing him throughout the draft process. By league rule, he can't hire another agent for another five days.

Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News writes that Smith believed he "would be and should be" the No. 1 overall pick in the draft. When he didn't make the first round, the agents paid the price.

How's that work with payment?

I don't know the first thing about it, but I do know that agents usually get a percentage of every contract/endorsement a guy has that they help broker.

But in this case, the agents are fired before signing his deal, so I wonder how they are compensated for the work they did up to this point.

How the hell could his agents have controlled that?

By representing the actual 1st pick, or the 31 guys after him.

Well, agents do have a part in where a guy gets drafted. they work the phones and try and sell their client to teams. Seeing that Geno fell out of the first round and wasn't even the first QB taken, I think he has plenty of grounds to fire his agents for failing to deliver.

By not leading Smith to believe he would be the the #1 pick.

Agents know how it is. It is the world they live in. One minute you're signing RGIII, the next minute you're trying to sign nine year old girls for the Tri County beauty contest.

Geno seems like a perfect fit for the Jets.

I don't recall a single analyst speculating Geno would be the #1 overall pick.

He wasn't even the consensus best QB in the draft.

Dudes sense of reality is skewed.

They had a documentary on this on ESPN a while back. One of the agents they followed had this happen to him, and IIRC (and someone can correct me I'f I'm wrong) the agents pretty much just lost a ton of money they invested in the athlete.

ESPN did a 30 for 30 on agents. What I gathered from it is that the players are not financially liable to the agents at all. The agent fronts the money for training, marketing, etc, but the player isn't actually "under contract." Meaning they are free to change representation at any time with no penalty.

This. If his agents were blowing smoke up his arse then I guess he had a reason to get rid of them.
