Adrian Peterson: Roger Goodell was blind to what I was going through

Vikings running back Adrian Peterson has returned to the NFL successfully, leading the league in rushing and leading his team to the playoffs. But he’s still not happy with the way the NFL handled him last year, when he played just one game before he was sidelined and suspended for abusing his son.

Peterson told Sports Illustrated that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell simply didn’t grasp Peterson’s life experiences.

“Roger Goodell, man, I don’t know. . . . This is when I knew he was blind to the fact of what I was going through. I sat down with him. He asked me, ‘What is a whuppin’? . . . It was one of the first questions. . . . It kind of showed me we were on a totally different level. It’s just the way of life. For instance, in Texas, we know what whuppin’s are. Down there, if it snows, people are going to go crazy. They’re going to close schools. They’re going to shut it down. Here, you’re used to that. It was just a tough situation, because of misperception. . . . I get it. I get why. But you still shouldn’t pass judgment on people when you don’t know.”

I feel like the less Peterson talks about that whole situation, the better.

What a whuppin is, in Peterson’s case, is a freakishly strong man picking up a stick and beating a little boy with it until the boy bled from his back, buttocks, ankles, legs and scrotum. The little boy also had defensive wounds on his hands.

He beat his kid to a pulp, didn't play, and still got paid. He needs a bucket of shut the hell up.

I would assume Goodell was just trying to get clarification on the context of Peterson's use of the word. Peterson is just dumb to think Goodell didn't understand the word. Obviously he is aware of the base definition of the word "whoopin'". Pretty sure Peterson was trying to allude to the difference in race and socioeconomics.

He's going to lose this argument. He didn't simply whip or scold his kid, he took it waaaaaayyy to far, to the point that he was charged with a crime. No one is going to take his side that doesn't have a clear ulterior motive.

Agree...but Peterson isnt saying something people from the south dont understand.. A wuppin isnt some end of the world idea that shouldve resulted in his suspension. He should have been counseled and shown that todays society isnt as understanding of this old practice.

The thought that Goodell doesnt understand is exactly why him being arbitrator of all within the NFL is so laughable..But whos to blame, the players themselves agreed to it during collective bargaining.

Nobody is going to give him any sympathy for what he did to his son. Bottom line is that he went too far.

Own up to it, accept your punishment, learn from it, and move on.

I assume Adrian received similar "Whoopins" growing up, so in that sense he does understand what his son was going through. Those "whoopins" contributed to him being the person he is today (at least contributed to his toughness).

Now society has changed and those type whoopins are treated differently than in the times of Adrian's youth. Public opinion / mob mentality is tough to defend against.

I've seen coaches get fired for doing the same thing for 10 years... Times changed and they didn't adjust. Adrian's situation is a little more extreme in that it was his young son that he abused.

Just saying, I can see where he is coming from in so far as a lot of people who are judging him have no similar frame of reference.

Triggered Responses: [ON] off

ETA: Richard Prior has a comedy bit about when his grandmother used to whip him with a switch. she made him go out and pick it from the garden, then she would swish it through the air and he could hear it whip through the air. That is somehow comedic, but when we see the results it's criminal........ Just saying the constant OUTRAGE is bordering on being disingenuous.

There's a big difference between a spanking and beating a child to the point that his legs, hands, and scrotum bleed. To pretend there isn't a difference is what's really disingenuous.

Muslims from North Africa and parts of the Middle East are taught to disrespect women and treat them as sexual objects. Do you have the same kind of sympathy for what happened in Germany?

frick AP. I have a two year old. I don't know how in the hell anyone could beat the hell out of someone that innocent and small especially as a 6'2 230 pound monster.
