Across the board, officiating has been on a steep decline

With every sport, it seems. I don't watch hockey so who knows if they are affected. But the problems with the NFL refs over the last couple of years has well documented, we had to finally get instant replay into baseball, and we're watching basketball's example tonight. How can you not have your most experienced and best rated crew running the Final Four?

So what's the culprit? We just complaining more, or is this a real problem? I know with the NFL, I feel like they keep throwing more and more rules at the refs and are not really showing them how to properly officiate them, leaving too much to interpretation.

No reason that shot clock violation shouldn't be reviewable. Judgment calls in basketball are insanely difficult to officiate. That shot clock violation was not up for debate.

I dont think the officiating is worse. Its just that we now have HD with a million camera angles so every bad call gets noticed/magnified.

Officiating has always been bad and always will be until the refs themselves can be fined just like the players. They need to be reviewed more closely and actually have penalties just like other members that are a part of the game.

Having said that, it's rare that a ref costs a team a game. It's happened before. But it's usually not the reason why a team lost and it's definitely not the reason Kentucky lost tonight.

I know complaining about the ref's is just one of those thigns fans do, and I was watching this game on and off so I don't know a lot of what happened, but my twitter feed was absolutely blowing up about what was going on tonight.

They have a far tougher job than most people realize. The high def world of today makes it look like it's easy to see everything but put on the stripes and give it a try.

I'm sure they do. Just like All Pro QBs throw interceptions the best officials screw the pooch and blow calls too. It's not an easy job.

The block/charge call in college has been the worst officiated call in all of college sports for years now.

Was it blowing up last year when Harrison and Randall kept getting bogus calls in their favor?

The officiating in CBB makes the sport borderline unwatchable at times.

Just as bad in the NBA.

It's all subjective for the most part. It's usually just too close to call most times unless it's blatant and its hardly ever like that. They just call it on a whim.

Agreed... but what is more astonishing is that the refs had review... and slow motion, and missed a Flagrant 1 call. That makes me question the crew in general. At least watching the shot clock no call, the sound seemed later than the sight of the clock hitting zero, so I understand it.
