re: A supercut of David Stern Getting Booed last night and loving it

The NBA had a coke problem and the finals were on tape-delay when he came into power. I think he has done a fantastic job. Yeah he had the ref problem, but thats going to happen in the easiset sport to shave points, that's really the only major pockmark on his career. But being around for 30 years thats not bad at all.

Regarding on-court matters, absolutely. When you see a boring game where the score is in the 70's,

wait, what? who are you crediting with the rules changes to tone down hand-checking and other contact?

how on earth can you look at the totality of Stern's 30 year career and say he was a horrible commissioner?

Yes, those are Stern's rules, and they were made with the intent on keeping scoring at an entertaining level, but in the last 25 years, the game has still become way more physical somehow. It was entertaining when 2 or 3 teams played Motor City Bad Boy ball, but now there are only 2 or 3 teams who DON'T play like that, and it isn't good (don't get me wrong--I still like it, but many are subconsciously turned off by it). The solution is for officials to be hawks on what we call ticky-tack fouls. Sure, we'll all bitch about them, but the game will be one more focused on skill and less on brute strength (not that either is good or bad), and scoring will naturally increase since scoring will be easier.

The first hand gesture was hilarious. After that it was just stupid.

The comments were great though.

No it hasn't. Just slower. The pace of the game is slower because you can't put a hand on guards anymore(thus less physical), so they just pound the rock for 5-10 seconds a possession.

It was funny the first 5 times he delayed speaking but it got old fast. Swarmy Jew.

Do you honestly think this wouldn't have changed sooner or later?

Look away from the ball and down low. Way more physical. A lot more nitpicky away from the ball fouls were enforced in the 1980's.

I'm still bitter about the CP3 block to the Lakers.

It pisses me off that he enjoys my boos.

I need him to hate me as much as I hate him for that veto.

How could you possibly think he was a horrible commissioner? He's possibly the best commissioner of any US sport ever. Look at where the NBA and basketball in general was 30 years ago when he took over compared to today.

I kige this

You have no evidence to support this claim.

Good call there, Atticus. Sorry for not firing up the VCR more in the 1980's for you. It's common knowledge that the game is more physical than it used to be.

No it isn't.

quote:

"I think the game has changed. Guys are smaller. When I came in it was more traditional, two big guys, back to the basket, a more methodical game. More inside-out. When I first came into the league you had some pretty talented big men. I think of Hakeem [Olajuwon], I think of [Patrick] Ewing, David Robinson, Shaq [O'Neal], Rik Smits. Even the guys that were second-tier were still pretty good ... and surprisingly had good touch. The power forward was a powerful guy. Now a power forward is a tweener who shoots. That game's changed. It's become more up-and-down. Some of the sets within the game have changed. It's less physical.
That [D'Antoni] style of play changed things. A lot of the sets that people run, the thinking, the getting up and down are Phoenix and Mike D'Antoni's system. A couple of things came together and aligned perfectly. The league de-emphasized the physicality of the game, [made it] less physical, more scoring. I think they made a concerted effort to increase the scoring and not have these 84-85 ballgames

-Grant Hill

I was being polite earlier-you are talking out of your ass, because you don't know shite about the NBA.

Wat? Common knowledge says the exact opposite.
