Despite a global pandemic and a previous deal with a minority owner that fell through, the Wilpon Family – owners of the New York Mets – are moving ahead with plans to sell the team. Mets fans rejoice.
To that end, a whopper of a possible bidder has emerged. It’s power couple time:

Whoa! Alex Rodriguez, Jennifer Lopez Retain JPMorgan to Raise Money for Mets Bid
Retired baseball star Alex Rodriguez and fiancé Jennifer Lopez have retained JPMorgan Chase to raise capital for a possible bid on the New York Mets, people familiar with the matter said.

The previously reported deal – the one that fell apart with minority owner Steve Cohen – valued the club at $2.6 billion, and involved the Wilpon family retaining control of the team for a five-year phase out period. If the Mets are still valued in that range amid all this craziness, then it makes sense that ARod and JLo are working to find financing – their combined net worth, per Variety, is a mere $700 million.
That is to say, should these two lead a group to buy the Mets, they’d become something of a “face” of the ownership group, though they’d have to find some serious additional financial partners. Nevertheless, it would be kind of fun to have

Baseball also recently passed some rule that allows for investment funds to buy minority stakes in clubs.

Will Arod give away Pete Alonso to the Yanks for basically nothing? Jeter did the Yanks a solid with the Stanton deal.

A-Rod approached Miami businessman Jorge Mas, who came close to buying the Marlins, about joining forces in a potential Mets bid — but Mas declined the offer.

Even though A-Rid made well over $500 million in his career, remember taxes took half that. That still means he would have to have made $100+ million off business deals snd endorsements just to get to around $350M.
J-Lo is probably worth about $350-$400M as well, so that's probably a good estimate. They're filthy rich, but not Buy a sports team alone rich.
Thats essentially reserved for tech and energy billionaires and Hedge Fund managers. That's basically all that can shell out $2-3 billion ona whim now.

A-Rod’s not trying to be the outright majority owner. He wants to buy a small piece of the team but have a team presidency-type role with strong input on the baseball operations of the team similar to Jeter with the Marlins and Nolan Ryan with the Rangers. Of course the question to ask is why would anybody want A-Rod to have that type of role for their team? Jeter and Ryan are beloved icons in baseball. Making those guys the face of your organization makes sense. A-Rod is a very polarizing figure who’s served two long suspensions for PEDs. Not exactly the type of person you bring in to sell to your fanbase.
