A billion people could watch the India-Pakistan Champions Trophy cricket final tonight

India and Pakistan face off tonight at the Kensington Oval cricket ground in London, England at the Champions Trophy final. The tournament happens once every four years, and is scheduled to occur in between World Cups, so that fans don't have to wait four years for a major cricket tournament.
It is only the second time India and Pakistan face each other in the final of a major tournament. The last one was 32 years ago in 1985 when India beat Pakistan in Australia at the Benson and Hedges World Championship of Cricket - LINK
India have never lost to Pakistan in major ICC tournaments or at World Cup matches, although Pakistan has a better overall record against India. However in crunch high pressure high stake matches, India seems to bring a little extra to the table, or Pakistan just fizzles out.
India and Australia were the favorites going into this year's edition, but Australia crashed out of the league stages and didn't even make the semifinals.
India has already beaten Pakistan once (both teams' first league match) and is expected to win again in the final.
There is none of the LSU vs Bama - can't beat the same team twice - mentality leading into the final. Pakistan are clear underdogs for the match, which starts at 4:30 am CST Sunday morning if I recall correctly.

Imagine Barry Bonds batting for 6 hours straight, that happens sometimes with the top players, they bat until they're out and it's very difficult to get a good batter out. No "pitching around" in cricket either.

One of the most heated sports rivalries in the world. I cannot imagine the pressure these cricket players are feeling right now.

And it is in London, with very large Indian and Pakistani population. Although from what I understand, India and Pakistan played their league match the day after the recent terrorist attack in London and the game went without a hitch. But it is hilarious to see the Indian and Pakistani fans troll each other on Facebook. There is tons of trash talking on both sides.

This is why sports matter. And while our sports fandom is great, around the world soccer and cricket are incredible.

Yeah because after the Civil War, we haven't been trying to kill each other. The fandom you speak of is pure religious or national hate...good thing we have sport.
True - it's important that Pakistan and India settle their differences in sport rather than trying to genocidal murder each other like during Partition.
Sport is good for that.
We should have played the Soviet Union in basketball and hockey every year...just to let things simmer down.

Yes, sport around the world can turn into a battle field for political and national hatred. But it can also be so much more. A billion people watching India take on Pakistan can only help. It certainly will not hurt relations between the countries.

Relations between the two are shite but are currently stable. That being said, they hate each other. Out of sight, out of mind is one reason for the current stability imho. However, their hatred is multi-faceted and continually simmering. They just need a flashpoint. Sport, which can be a unifier, can also open up some old wounds. I guess time will tell. My point is...it could actually make things worse.
