This is one of the reasons why I don't think he'd be that great today. I doubt he'd be doing that shite.

Les Miles recruited more eventual NFL players than any coach over the past decade with a Midwestern version of that shite.

I think Pete would have still put up good numbers that still wouldn't mean squat in the W/L column.

I'm not entirely sure he'd be an NBA basketball player if he was born 25 years ago instead of back in the day.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say if white dudes like Kyle Korver, JJ Reddick & Mike Dunleavy Jr have had pretty successful careers in the NBA, Maravich would do perfectly fine.

ReauxTide, you have no clue and/or you must be very young. Pete was triple teamed all during his college years, there were all kinds of "schemes" set up just to stop him; no 3 point line & no shot clock. And to educate yourself, check out his career stats. For 3 seasons as freshmen could not play then. Bob Cousey, Mr. Point Guard & the first Pistol, said over & over & over again how great a player Pete was, and he was talking about his NBA career. All those players back then have said the same things. Magic Johnson especially used to rave about the Pistol. But you know better, right?

re: 40 years ago, Pistol Pete won the NBA scoring title ...
Some things I read about Pete's NBA career include that his teammates didn't like him during his rookie season but ended up loving him by the end of the year. Then, he gets a horrible sickness just before his 2nd season and loses 25 lbs and it takes the full year to regain his weight and get to full speed.

He played a few exhibition games with Dr. J when the Hawks thought they had his rights. They were a match made in heaven with Pete averaging 14 assists/game and winning big.

With the Jazz, the team had no talent for the initial few years but were finally going to make the playoffs when their PF had a season ending injury with about a month left.

Then Pete gets the horrific knee injury, which possibly could have been fixed better these days but was never the same for him after that.

He goes to the Celtics and becomes a role player but retires because of his knee issues. The Celtics win the championship the following year.

His NBA career was really impressive but ultimately more of a 'what could've been'.

Tide Troll ReauxlTide222

shame on you. are you sure that Namath could cut it in the NFL? Or does his playing for Bama mean he's better than the other old guys?

No, I'm not sure he could cut it in the NFL today. Certainly wouldn't be a "great." He's overrated.

Doctor J said he has great memories of the two preseason games with Pete. He said if you were open, Pete would get you the ball.
Those two would have made Atlanta a basketball town.

Pete's knee wasn't the problem, his head was. He could still play. He scored 38 in the intrasquad game and retired the next day.

No one knows how Pistol Pete's game would translate. Could he run the pick and roll in the NBA of today? Would he develop the range for a 3 pt shot?

He could have been a better version of Steve Nash or he could have been Ricky Rubio, or Jason Williams type. Nobody really knows. Athletics are in a state of perpetual improvement so he would be closer to Rubio imo.

I assume a troll looking to bait, but JUST incase you are that stupid, check out the linked video below. The first couple of minutes are his 69 point game. Mind you, he fouled out of that game and had no 3 point line. And Bob Macadoo was guarding him.....

The Greatest

Plus, for those that say he couldn't hang....he was 6'5 with hops

Goddam you are the poster child for the inferiority complex millennial bball watcher.

Shove your fricking PER true Fg% up your arse & respect greats that preceded your worthless life. Every day you shite on anything you haven't seen & pump up what you have seen.

He averaged 31 PPG w/out a 3pt line. Wtf don't you understand about that , stat boy

It's extremely impressive, but he also shot 28 times per game and only made 43.3% of this FGs, which was below his career average, and that career average shooting percentage is not especially stellar.

I'd want to know if Pete could guard the modern wings... the defensive effort is the biggest difference between the 70s and now

All these youngesters knowing better than Cousey, Magic & Dr. J. to just name the 3 HOF's listed here. I'd bet none of you kids have even seen one high light film of his let alone saw him play, so I am curious as to what you are basing your expertise on. Pete was as great as he was while fighting his own demons. It's hard to imagine just how much greater he would have been had he had today's support staff around him.
