I agree. They'd cut off the initial penetration that led to all that SA passing. Then Rodman would hold his own with Duncan and totally control the boards. Miami failed on all those fronts.

2001 Lakeshow was only the second team in nba history to beat 4 50+ win teams in the playoffs.

And they blew threw them, sweeping all the way to the finals and only lost in that one overtime game when Iverson went crazy.

2001 Lakeshow GOAT at their peak.

2014 Spurs had the best playoffs shooting performance I've ever seen. I wonder how they stack up historically.

I generally defer to older teams because I feel the 'young' crowd, myself included, forgets how good the older teams were. That said, these Spurs ran through a gauntlet of a conference from beginning to end.

I also think people think of the awesome 80's squads simply because of the name on the front of their jersey (Celtics, Lakers).

Fwiw- I think '94 Rockets could have handled the Bulls.

I think these Spurs of 2014 belong with the Lakers of 2001 and Bulls of '96.

I am sick of the 'Jordan/end thread' logic. Who was the best team they beat in the East? They sort of remind me of the Heat in a sense that it was them and some also rans in the East.

important question: which set of rules?

i presumed we were talking modern basketball and modern NBA rules

i'll go with the 96 Bulls led by the one the only His Airness... 72 wins means you came hard EVERY night... and they actually beat someone legit in the Finals

Because the two time defending champs (with three HOFers on the roster) weren't legit?

Phil Jackson vs Pop would be an interesting chess match.

Spoelstra was drawing plays with crayons.

I get what youre saying, but in terms of the Finals, going 6 for 6 without ever being taken to a game 7 stands for something...

That Spurs team wouldn't hang with the Lakers dynasty let alone the Bulls dynasty. It's a tired conversation

2014 Spurs: 62-20 in regular season, 16-7 in playoffs

1996 Bulls: 72-10 in regular season, 15-3 in playoffs.

This Spurs team was great, and their first half performance against the Heat in Game 3 maybe the GOAT for a team, but that Bulls team would most likely handle the Spurs. I think people sometimes forget three very important things when saying the spurs would win or are the best team ever

1. They almost lost to the 8 seed in the first round. That Mavs team was very well coached, but they didn't have a ton of talent. Taking SA to 7 diminishes the team's accomplishments slightly.

2. The Heat weren't very good in the second half of the season. They finished the regular season 11-14, but it wasn't really talked about as much as it normally would because of Indy's collapse and the East's crappy teams in general. They played a bad Charlotte team without their best player in rd 1, an old Nets team without one of their top players in rd 2, and an Indy team that almost lost to ATL (with no Horford) in the first round and was collapsing to end the season.

3. The Spurs would match up very poorly with the Heat. Ron Harper would have 6 inches on Tony Parker at the point, Rodman would hound Duncan on defense, and the spurs don't have enough defenders to stop the combo of Kukoc, Pippen, and Jordan.

This Spurs team was really good, but let's not try and get overwhelmed with the Spurs just because their team played more recently.

the spurs looked like your typically strong finals team in games 1 and 2 in games 3-5, they were on another level. their shooting and passing was seriously mind-blowing, looking back

I feel like pop had a double secret play book that they spent all year developing for the heat that they didn't use until the finals

The 2014 Spurs are the best NBA team in a long, long time. I would say the 2001 Lakers are the first team working backwards that I would say could beat them.

2001 Lakers
2014 Spurs
2008 Celtics

Probably the three best teams since the turn of the century.

You make great points, but did the Bulls ever play a team as good as the Mavs in round one?

Did the Bulls ever rest starters en masse?

Did the Bulls ever play in a conference as stacked as the West in 2014?
