They were a good team. One loss to a Stanford team that finished No. 16 and conf champs and played great in the Bowl.
That year was a shame.
You also had a stacked Tennessee team that got totally fricked over by LSU.

In the 90's, Nebraska had the best S&C program in the country by far. If Osborn wanted to run the Pirate Spread like Leach runs, and recruited the right players for it, he would have gotten similar results.
Or he could have installed the right players into a pro-style offense and won too.
Is that what we're calling steroids now?

If Nebraska was on them, I'm sure the OU, UT, FSU, LSU, and bama's of the world were on them too.

I don't think it could

Watching these highlights made me realize Crouch was definitely deserving of the Heisman in '01
i.e. it takes a Heisman caliber QB to make it effective
Nebraska ran the veer option, mostly out of the I formation. For that to work you can't have any major mismatches going against you. Your QB has to be faster than the OLBs and if you're playing against an elite defense you're essentially screwed. The secondary is going to be good enough to take out the pitch guy and the defensive line will eat your lunch in the middle and your fullback won't be a threat.
For the triple veer option to work, all 3 have to be a threat. Call me crazy, but I can't imagine many teams having any success with the fullback against Bama or LSU last year.

I'm sure there were uses, but I don't think it was ever quite like Nebraska.

Really? What are you basing this on?

Another thing: it's just tough for that offense to have sustained success at an elite level if for any other reason that when they were most successful they were always chop blocking the shite out of everyone.
One of the simple keys to beating that offense is to keep your D lineman on their feet. If you watch tapes of old Nebraska teams they're running all over everyone not because they're necessarily pushing people around but because they chop the shite out of the D lineman.

The same can be said of urban Meyer's offense or Gus Malzahn's offense or Art Briles offense.
or look at our offense. When has USC's offense been good without a heisman type player at QB?
FAct is, all offenses require good to great QB play. Just look at LSU.

If you're looking for an actual source, I'm not pretending to have any.
But you don't just turn average local guys into monsters who go back to being average local guys in the NFL.

Legal blocks. you don't think UF knew this going in. It was no mystery what Nebraska was gonna do. You make it sound like these teams taht nebraska drug their nuts over had no clue to stay on their feet, take out the pitch man, do this, do that, etc.

Think about it.
Nebraska had a very specific offense that really narrowed down the type of skills needed on the OL and at FB.
Plus, I imagine EVERY HS in Nebraska had been running that offense since middle school.
I'm not saying they didn't widely use steroids, I'm just saying it was no more than any other major D1 program.

i *think* the NCAA tweaked the rule a little bit this year. not sure on the specifics, but i remember hearing something about chop/cut blocks being changed.

I'm specifically talking about linemen. Pretty sure those guys blew up at Nebraska then regressed in the NFL where the drug testing is more strict.

This kinda makes sense. Malzahn ran essentially an inverted veer offense in 2010 with Cam.

I believe there were a few guys who made it. Adn the reason they "blew up" is because they were running a specific scheme that gave them an advantage.

Hmmm...if they totally got rid of them, then the option will not work. End of story.
It depends on the rule change.

I'm sure some were chops, but bear in mind cut blocking =/= chop blocking.
Trust me, we AU types know how to chop.

They didn't. Watch a GaTech game and you'll still see plenty.
Heck you see some on a lot of WR screens these days; gives the WR with the ball the split second he needs to speed past the first CB.
