A little back story here: We are planning to buy a 2014-2016 Toyota Sequoia in the next few months. We currently own the following, with no car notes:

Hers: 2007 Honda Accord LX with 64k miles
Mine: 2006 Toyota 4Runner with 164k miles

KBB has the Accord valued at $7k and the 4Runner valued at $8k, while I see more realistic listings on eBay that show a similar Accord at $7500 and a similar 4Runner at $10,500.

Here is my dilemma. The Sequoia is going to be her new car. Our original plan was to sell her Accord when we purchased her new car. Now it seems that we would be better off selling my car, not only because it would provide more money, but also factoring in the age, mileage, etc.

However, I hate driving cars. I can't stand being that low to the ground, and love having the utility that the 4runner has provided. Is there any argument to be made for keeping my car and selling the Accord, other than my personal views on driving a car vs SUV. My brain is telling me to keep the reliable car with the fewest miles and sell the car that is worth more, but I really cant stand to think about having to drive a damn car every day for at least the next five years.

Thanks in advance MT.

Keep the 4runner. Is 3k max worth the sacrifice? Not to mention when you are ready to buy a car for yourself the 4runner will be at least 3k more valuable at that time as well. Plus you get the enjoyment of not driving a grandma car. I hate sedans myself. Either give me a sports car, SUV, or a jeep wrangler. Nothing else will ever be owned in my household since the wife agrees 100%

Keep the 4runner. The gap in value between the two will just get wider-That 4 runner will still be worth a good chunk of change with 200K miles on it.

If you don't like driving a car, why in the hell would you consider driving a car?

If the difference in money is the issue, get a lower trim in the Sequoia, get an older model or wait until you save up the $3k extra. I can't picture a scenario where I would get rid of a vehicle I like to drive one I hate.

IMO, this is the only argument for keeping the 4-Runner.

If you keep the Accord, you'll make more money off the sale of the 4-Runner vs selling the Accord. And the Accord should be less maintenance cost considering the mileage of the 2 cars.

Thanks for the responses. You have definitely made me feel better about keeping the 4runner. I was pleasantly surprised at how much it is still worth, and very surprised that the Accord wasn't worth more (especially with the average of 6500 miles a year!)

Sell the accord unless you can't afford the gas

Keep the 4runner, they are bulletproof and easy to sell.

You can sell a 4runner with 500,000 miles in a week.

I was in a very very similar situation years ago with my truck or wife's car when we upgraded her to an SUV.

Keep the 4-runner because you will never get over your hatred of driving cars.
