The wife and I talk about this a lot. Of course, it depends on where our kids/grandkids are living. However, all else being equal, we have decided on either NYC or Paris. But we are city folk.

I think we will likely move to NOLA in our late 40s or early 50s. The wife wants to be near her parents. I am not sure how long we would live there.

We have discussed 6 months denver/ 6 months new orleans but that sounds really expensive.

No matter what, I fully expect us to live new orleans for a few months a year starting in 3-4 years. we already spend about a month there each year. Its only going to increase.

I like the idea of living in a no income tax state so I get to keep that little bit of extra money in retirement.

my goal is to make enough money to not be too worried about tax burdens and living where I most want to live. There are some places with really low cost of living indices, but they are shitty places to live.

True, I'm just trying to make room for the coke and hookers. I don't want to have to buy the stuff that's been stepped on.

How are things by the way? Germany getting a little wild lately.

you and the lady have any euro trips planned? I'm seriously thinking about retiring in Norway after my last 2 trips there. Great standard of living!

See my edit above if you missed it.

Not particularly. As you may have noticed, we moved from NO to Austin for money on her end. Now, I'm trying to make a jump myself so you know how that goes on the vacation front. I don't think all the recent action in Europe is making her feel good about it but if we go that way I'd try to talk her into Croatia.

If not Europe probably South America due to time constraints. After we saw you we went to Thailand/Cambodia. Thailand is very pleasant for a family to navigate.

I'm sure Norway, Iceland etc are just so clean and safe you don't know what to do with yourself. My first visit to Austin was so uncomfortable because I haven't felt that safe in years

Germany is great. We still feel safer here than we did in LA.
We are going to Croatia in a couple of weeks for a beach vacation. We are trying to figure out what to do in October when the kids have a break, and are looking at either Iceland or Slovenia. This year was a bit busy since I got a new job in May that moved me to a different city, but it was a good move.
Shoot me an email - I'll send you a video from my Norway trip in May.

You are going to have to post some of this on the Travel Board. I will love it and be so annoyed I'm not doing it myself at the same time. It's like the worst thing and the best ever.

Email incoming.

I would love to have a condo in the french quarter and a sailboat in the Caribbean when I retire. I'm saving my arse off to be able to do whatever I want. I'm sure those plans will change as I get older. I just want to maybe have one place I own and just travel around all the time.

In terms of what you can get for the price Nova Scotia can't be beat. Fatty has a builder selected (my builder) for under 100k cdn he will have a three bedroom overlooking the prettiest lake.

If I could leave now I would but being a teacher that would mean giving up what I have put into the pension system. So I will reluctantly wait it out and then get the hell out of this place. My preference is up towards the Northwest. Somewhere around Seattle. It is beautiful and I love the weather. People mention all the rain but the temps are cool and the rain isn't the kind of rain we have down here. I can deal with it. In a perfect world I will have a house up there and a condo on the beach somewhere in Florida and trade time between the two.

I think Cali is nice, but wouldn't the taxes kick your arse to live there as a retiree?
I'm assuming we will have something in downtown NOLA for retirement, but that's all just a dream for now. Too far off.

Not only that, but for most people their lifetime earnings from living in a lower cost of living area would translate poorly to moving there.

Moving from California is so "great" for the same reason.

Destin or Pensacola Beach. And never leave because once you get 5 miles inland, Florida turns to trash.

In lived in Cali for 5 years. My mother still lives there. F that state and their state income taxes and other taxes and costs of living. Not worth it.
