I was at 41% last year. What would be interesting to know is how is everybody doing this year. January has been a tough month. I am currently at -2.9 % on the year. Looks like I am also in the red today. Interesting to know if anyone has managed to stay in the green in January.

Mine is -2.24% this year, but it seems much, much worse.

I am with you On TheBrink. January has been like a YO YO. I have been as good as 20000 to the good, and as bad as 15,000 to the bad. I wish the markets would stabilize some.

Man, these last 6 days, and today as well, have put a big dent in mine. Yesterday, mine was even down a 1/2 percent when the markets were ok.

Good thing I am only 31!

ETA: My company is with Principal and I am in a 2045 Lifetime Fund.

At 31 you are going to see plenty of ups and downs. You will need to ride them out. You have pleny of time.

Oh yeah, no worries here. I have purposefully not checked my 401K in the past week cause I know it has not been good to me.

I only check mine every 6 months or so.

I don't understand everyone freaking out about Jan 2014. Were you planning on cashing out this month?

No, I was not. You sound like I a guy at my work. I don't know man, I like to check mine everyday. I am just a rare breed I guess. That and I have worked really hard to save everything I could since starting my career, and it just pains me to see it go, albeit temporary. Hopefully temporary.

I check my stock holdings every day, so it's pretty easy to just type the letters of my 401k funds as well for a quick glance. I probably log into Fidelity once a week or so to see the full balance, but don't get too worked up if it's down a bit. I'm 29 so I realize I have a LOT of time before withdrawing anything.

Different strokes I guess.
I check equities once a week or so - more out of curiosity than with any intent to re-allocate. I only do a full review and re-allocate equities once a quarter. Then again, I feel like I have another 30-40 years before retirement, so don't feel the need to get too worked up. I will see another 4-8 crashes before then.

A lot like me. Same with my stock holdings, I have my fund ticker in there as well. Yeah, I really don't get too terribly worked up about it as I know I have a long way to go.

I check mine daily. I also have my holdings on my phone so that I can check mine after the markets close.

Same here. I look for major dips to make mid day moves.

FYI, I'm at -2.7% YTD.

How can you make mid-day moves out of a 401K?
They don't exactly process instantaneously - at least mind doesn't.
They need to stop the statutory tie in to the mutual fund industry.

I wasn't speaking to "401K" action, just stock movement in general.

You can't process stock purchases with your MIND?

Most of mine is in ETFs. They are like mutual funds, however they trade like stocks. I can buy and trade anytime during the day when the stock market is open. I can sell an etf and within a minute use that money to purchase another etf.
