What do you think the average family spends on cell phone and tv

services per month. I was thinking about this the other day as I see more and more people with smart phones, etc. The damn kids in my neighborhood all seem to have them.
I am out of the loop and haven't looked at plans in a long time, but what do you think the average family is spending for say 3 phones with the whole data package as well as for their HDTV cable service with all of the movie channels, etc?
We are living in such a tough economy, I am sure people are cutting things like this out of their life in order to pay down bills, etc, aren't they?

No kids, but:
2 cell phones with unlimited data - $90/month
Cable and Internet = $150/month

Well I know what we have:
Sprint: $69/month x 4 lines, although I don't know if its reduced since its a family plan.
Cox: IDK what my parents pay, but my bill used to be about $130 for cable + internet. However, I know my sister is at SLU, and Charter is more expensive.
Assume those prices and that comes to 276+130=406, and neither of those are top-tier plans, they are both the middle tiers. There's one data point.

We pay right around $300 for two cell phones with data plans, cable and internet. I feel like we're getting ripped off on the cable though.

I feel like we all get ripped off for all of it.

I just can't bring myself to do it with the phone. I have the basic plan with an old phone and I think it includes 200 text messages.
The cable thing just pissed me off too with the cost. I am paying $42 a month and it just seems like such a waste.

Do you find the local phone helpful?
Secondly, does that include HBO & Showtime?

Yes: tied to my alarm

HBO, sports tier, and some other tier with a bunch of random channels.
I talked them down in price for the first 12 months. I'll probably just keep the sports tier if they balk at keeping my rate the same.

Home phones are the mutual funds of the communications world.
Just saying.

You are right but I have to have one for my alarm. Side but have to have it. Same reason he needed his.

If my alarm could be tied to the cell phone, I'd do it.

I spend $70 per month on my cell phone.
My lady friend spends about the same.
We don't have cable TV so no money spent there.
Actually, that's about 25% of the reason we got rid of cable. Mostly we got rid of it because its a huge waste of money. It provided little value, and probably contributed to a lower quality of life. I'm pretty tech savvy so I'm able to get anything we want to watch on TV over the internet and play it on our TV (I have a central server system that DVR's as well - free HD TV OTA FTW!)
Anyway, my point is that we are saving $80+ on cable per month and not really missing anything. About the only thing I miss is live sports, but to be honest, I am happier without it. I used to let sports schedules dictate my life, now without ESPN I only really watch the Saints and LSU (over the internet if needed). It's so nice to not be bombarded with useless sports "news" all the time. I find that I can still stay on top of all the pertinent news without having to hear that Tiger Woods had a bowel movement in between the 10th and 11th holes.

I was paying 142 for cable and internet and 55 for my wifes phone(mines through work), which has unlimited everything and 500 minutes a month.
But I called comcast and told them I couldn't affoard to keep paying that so thry gave me hbo and starz for 6 months and upgraded my internet speed, and dropped my bill to 100 a month for the next 6 months

Three cell phones (Verizon), one data plan (the kid's, not mine of course) $130 per month.
Digital cable with HD (no premium channels) plus Road Runner Internet $108. Every year when Time Warner tries to jack the rate the the "regular" $138 per month, I tell them I will switch to satellite if they do.

The main takeaway from this thread (if you didn't already know): haggle with cable/phone companies, they'll do anything to keep customers. I talked Sprint out of the extra $10/month fee for the Evo for the next year because their shitty servers died on the release day and I threatened to go to ATT.

Cells(2), TV, Internet, Phone = $325
Insurance is another huge monthly expense I never think about much
