What can apartment communities/landlords be responsible for?

I live in an apartment in which the landlord is responsible for the obvious maintenance. Found out today that a toilet is leaking. They are replacing the toilet but my water bill to more than double from $55 to $130.

I assume I am on the hook for that 75$ despite it being their fault

They aren't paying for the broken toilet?

They are paying for the replacement/maintenance but not for the increase in water bill that the defective toilet caused.

you regularly have a $55 water bill? good grief. Mine averages between 25-35 in a four person household.

Travel for work and it is the guest toilet/2nd bathroom that I never really am near all the time. No reason to notice it leaking

$55 is the absolute minimum too

Why don't you show the LL the difference in bill and see what he will do. It's not really his fault you didn't notice the leak. It might be your fault it was leaking (toilets just don't start leaking--they usually start leaking with a flush). Can't hurt to ask. If he doesn't pay, it's $55. I hope that will not kill you.

You should have me as a landlord. Apparently I just allow my tenants not to pay on the first of the month. Mother effers.

I'd imagine there is no way the landlord will pay the water bill for you. It is in your name and utilities are your obligation. Just be glad you caught it and are getting it fixed. I would only complain/demand money if it takes the landlord months to fix it and you continue to have to pay the huge water bill for multiple months.

ETA: May want to turn off the water to the toilet to avoid this if you haven't already. I assume that's possible.

Call the water company and ask for an adjustment. I had a similar situation a few years ago and found them to be quite reasonable to work with.

How can the landlord fix the issue if you do not inform him of the problem?

The toilet repair is on him, the water usage is on you.

I'd chalk it up to a lessened learned.

If you're paying the water co directly, they will definitely help you with a reduction if you document that a toilet was leaking. My water dept just requires a phone call and a simple letter describing the problem & fix.

Honestly, I don't think I'd potentially piss off my landlord over a 75 dollar water bill increase.

shite happens, and this is why you should have a "shite happens" account.
