I have been a long time Vanguard account holder. I keep enough personal $ invested with them to be a Flagship Client. However, two things happened recently that have me concerned.

First, my advisor up and disappeared (I think health reasons). The replacement was too busy to take my calls. I dropped out of the Personal Advisor Services since I wasn't getting the service. They finally followed up with me and talked me back into a plan.

Today, I went to login to my company SIMPLE IRA plan to make contributions for my company employees. I couldn't login. I contacted them by phone. Had to get a call back because agents were all busy. Spent an hour talking with different "agents" until I was routed to a tech guy. He couldn't resolve my issue and get me in. In fact they said I was not listed as an authorized user.

Fabulously pissed, I told them I set the damn thing up, made every deposit into the account over the past several years using the same user name and password since the beginning, etc. They had to start a trouble ticket. WTF? Really? Still can't access my company account. May not for several days according to the "tech guy".

This relationship has been tremendous until the last 6 months. Who is a comparable low cost alternative worth considering if this does not resolve to my satisfaction?

No Dice. Still no access. But thanks for the simple, potential solution.

I've had a relationship with vanguard for over 10 years and have spent the better part of three weeks attempting to open a new brokerage account for me and my wife. I've received 3 system generated emails instructing me to call them due to an error in my application. I've sat on hold for easily over and hour waiting on someone to answer the phone, only to be told there was no error and the account was still in processing. Meanwhile I setup and funded a fidelity account in a week.

I've had nothing but issues with them and getting my account funded. I have to send a personal check with the same f****** letter every time to them explaining what I want done so they can fund my account it's ridiculous.

First off, if you've been happy with Vanguard for a long time until just recently, it may be worth talking to them first to see what's up.

But if you do decide to split, I have a long history with Schwab going back to the early 90's, first as an employee of an investment firm that used them, and since around 2005 as a customer myself. Never had a problem with them and it's worth noting they recently dropped the expense ratios on their ETF's to match or beat Vanguard offerings.

Thanks for the useful info. I've thought Schwab would be my first alternate given my profile and desires. "Just set me up and visit the portfolio with me quarterly." Easy money, right?

I will run this up the pole with VGD yet again. Will see what transpires with this latest lock out on my company site. I do like the low fees on funds - especially if you stick mostly with index funds. I usually keep a sizable bucket of "play money" for the stock picker in me but keep the bulk in a diversified funds portfolio.

I like the .3% fee on the Personal Advisor Service. But, I'd still like to get my money's worth (and then some). This is not rocket science. It is mainly a guard against human emotion.

I wouldn't be surprised if the new fiduciary rule from the department of labor has Vanguard overwhelmed with new account openings. I know I personally just made the switch from Edward Jones after a couple years of "I'll eventually do it."

Have you considered Fidelity? They typically have excellent customer service. They usually are pretty easy to work with to setup IRA/401K for a small business. They even have brick and mortar in bigger cities.

My thinking has kind of been:

VGD
Schwab
Fidelity

In that order. But, only familiar first hand with VGD. Good to get a second on Fidelity. Thanks

Isn't vanguard's office in PA? Probably a lot of reps out today with the snowstorm...

You're right. I called this afternoon to follow up on an in-kind transfer, and the lady said they were short staffed.

Vanguard has great investment products, but they are a mediocre brokerage/financial services company. I used to have accounts at Vanguard, but a few years ago I consolidated everything at Fidelity including my primary checking/billpay.

Fidelity's customer service, website, apps, tools, research, etc are far superior to Vangauard. The core of my Fidelity portfolio is made up of Vanguard ETFs. So I get the best of both companies.

I've heard good things about Charles Schwab too.

Are you saying that Vanguard is becoming a "fiduciary" while E.Jones is not?

I'm just speculating that Vanguard might be getting a lot of new accounts opened lately by people who want to get out of actively managed funds and into a passive investing strategy.
