I was laid off last Wednesday. I start a new job on Monday. I only had enough vacation to complete a 40 hour week last week. Is it worth it to file for unemployment this week? Would I even get my $247 check since I already have a new job?

How bad do you need it?
Seems like things have worked out for you pretty fast, I wouldn't worry about it

Yeah I don't need it at all. Yeah I was very lucky to only be out of work for a week. I really thought I was going to struggle to find a job in Baton Rouge for the remainder of the year.... In engineering anyway.

I'd only do it if you have the spare time and want to learn how the process works. You won't get much if anything though, personally I'd rather just enjoy the time off but that's just me.

If Louisiana then you will not get anything. There is a "week of waiting" before you get unemployment. If you filed this week then this is your WOW. If you were still unemployed next week then you would start receiving a check then.

What does unemployment pay nowadays? Has to have gone up, there is a ton off people living off of it.

That's ridiculous. You already got another job, no need to get unemployment

I didn't make any money this week. That's a reason to file for unemployment. But like another poster said I probably won't get anything because of the week of waiting. Just didn't want to leave any money on the table.

Why? He paid into the system for it and he will be unemployed for a period of time...

He paid into it, it's his to have no matter if for only a few weeks.

He did not pay into the system, his employer paid into the system via unemployment insurance premiums.

You're an engineer and can't go one week without a paycheck?

Yeah I can go many weeks probably years without a pay check. And being an engineer has nothing to do with it. I know a lot of people that are terrible with money including engineers that do live pay check to pay check even though they make six figures. It was just a question. If I am eligible to get the money then why wouldn't I file for it?

if you had 40 hours of vacation that you used, then that counts as working for another week. then you have a 1 week dead period where you have to be out of work before getting un employment (at least in Louisiana)

after Katrina, the job i was working in New Orleans, was shut down. I filed you Unemployment, got one check... was finally able to get in touch with the company a few weeks later, they paid me my vacation, then i got a letter from the state asking for their money back

Not trying to be ugly here but you should be thankful that you have another job so quickly and focus on that instead of trying to get money that you don't need. No matter how many abuses there are to the system, two wrongs don't make a right. And just because you could be eligible for it doesn't mean you should apply for it. We are talking about one week of pay.

Well in theory you could say that the money that employers pay into FUI and SUI could theoretically be spent to better compensate their employees. But you're correct that it's the employer's cost.

should be thankful

Very thankful, lucky, blessed that I found a job so quickly. Like I said above I wasn't expecting to find a job here for the rest of the year. I had already set up my unemployment account because of that. Glad I won't need to use it just yet.

What a great mentality that is.

It should be "I am in dire need of this money, why wouldn't I file for it." Pretty much what is wrong with this country.
