About to bite the bullet and put my daughter on the policy. Is there a such thing as an "occasional driver"? Someone told my wife that is what they did.

Any suggestions to lower cost appreciated.

TIA

If she doesnt have her own car it wont be too bad. My policy went up a little but we owned 1 car and I drive a company car so she wasnt the primary driver. If you have 2 vehicles they will attach her to the one with the highest rates. When I bought her a car, the insurance showed the wife and I as primary drivers and then the insurance went up about $800/ year

So if I have 3 cars, they will attach one to me, wife and daughter even if she does not drive it all the time?

Most likely.
Depends on the insurance company and their policy.
At SF, your agent would be prudent to add her to the least expensive auto.
At farmers, drivers are rated then dividee by autos (3 drivers 2 cars less expensive).

Not sure about other carriers and their policies.

Yes. At least that's what Farm Bureau did with us. The 3rd truck was a farm vehicle and they didn't care at all that it wouldn't be anywhere but the farm 75% of the time. He was attached to it period.

eta: they did allow us to attach him to whichever vehicle so of course we attached him to the oldest.

girls don't hurt your insurance much

It is boys that cause it to skyrocket

Yes they will. They will also tell you that the kid will be on the oldest vehicle when actually they will be on the one thats the most exposure to them.Rates are based on several factors and not just the purchase or current value of the car

I did the quotes online with my insurer so I could move her between the vehicles. When I put her on the oldest, it was a little cheaper than the others.

Having younger drivers hurts real bad on your insurance premiums. There is just no way around it. Like a previous poster mentioned there is more to consider when rating a young driver than the value of the car. The limit of liability will most certainly be the key factor since teen drivers are way more likely to cause a liability claim than your average driver.

Go talk to you agent and see what he thinks can be done to help lower it. When I worked at State Farm they had a program that was wonderful. Being in the independent world now there are a couple things you can do to help the rates also. If you don't trust that your agent is going to do the right thing then you need to find a new agent.
