It almost never benefits you to file separately.

This. If you're on an income based repayment plan then you have to consider what joint filing will do to you. Your payments will be based on both incomes and could dramatically outweigh any benefits that filing jointly could give you.

Could you elaborate on this? My wife has student loans but doesn't work, however i'm not familiar with her repayment plan.
