Loan forgiveness is a great thing. I work for the state ( ) and enrolled in the program. I only have 108 monthly payments to go .

wow...that pretty much opens up all sorts of things

I had always thought morality and ethics were concepts for society, not for one's self...learn something new every day I guess....

we are in the process of this for my wife. teachers get 5k for 5 years, 17 if special ed or math. we sent the application to navient (was sallie mae). then we got a letter back from ed financial not navient? saying we don't hold the loans. then directs me to here, this and this to get a pin then go here and do this to find out who really has your loans. so far im stuck on getting a pin, she was declined because her info does not match up on her ss card. frustrating

I assume you're trying to access the NSLD (National Student Loan Database)?

This stuff can be pretty stupid at first. For instance, Sallie Mae had 3 different entities, so if you picked the wrong one/address it wouldn't work. Hopefully once you can see the loans and the holder you'll be good. Usually once the process is done you just have to do 2 minutes of paperwork to keep renewing whatever it is you are doing each year.

I'm currently looking into this for my wife. She is a nurse in the St Vincents medical system.

Haven't had any luck with anything other than her Perkins loans which is pretty much nothing.

Any ideas?

I've got about 12k I'm about to start pouring money into. I work for the state and could have the remaining balance forgiven after 10 years, but I hate debt hanging over my head. I want to be done. Setting my goal for 18 months.

If you work in a healthcare network that is a 501c3 instead of private practice, your loans can be 100% forgiven after 10 years of minimum payments.

All you need to know: LINK

But if you have any questions, I work in higher education, and this program is one of my areas of expertise. I will be happy to answer any questions. One of the things I would recommend is that if your loan balance is greater than your adjusted gross income, you can qualify for forgiveness in the lower cost income-driven plans rather than making the standard payment. This is very typical of early career medical professionals.

anc, Could you shoot me an email? boogabear2107 at gmail.

It looks like my wife may qualify for some of the repayment plans. Our combined gross income is more than her student loans but her income is not.

She has around 50k in loans, she is working for a not for profit hospital in an HPSA area. Which means she qualifies for something but this stuff is making my head spin.

My wife and I are both doing the loan repayment programs. I did mine with the feds, 3 yrs with the NHSC and she is doing hers through the state (Louisiana).
the federal program was a little easier to navigate than the state has been, although my wife has just 1 person that handles her "case" and i didnt really deal with any people. She's also doing the 10yr loan forgiveness and has 91 payments left.
By taking advantage of the Loan Repayment programs and the 10yr forgiveness, we're hoping to not have to use any of our earned income towards students loans. It took us about a year to figure out the rules of this game but i think we've got it now.

Here's a novel idea... How about you pay what you owe?

For nursing? Any tips on the rules of the game?

Question for you anc:

I am 23 years old, married, with a 2 year old. Have 22k in student loans that I am about to start paying on this month. I work for a public accounting firm. My 2014 AGI should be somewhere around $30k but my 2015 AGI will probably closer to $40k.

Any options for me? Also, I am the only one in the household working.

Thanks

There are no forgiveness opportunities available, and your AGI being more than your loan balance limits the repayment options to standard and graduated. You can go to student loans.gov and import your info from the student loan database and the IRS, and it will give you the options. With the one child, you may qualify for a Pay as You Earn plan, which is a significantly lower payment, but as your income grows, your payment will grow, possibly more than the standard.
