Spinoff: Is there an easy way to create a will for someone with no dependents and isn't married?

I basically want a legal document that says: "If I die, give all my assets to X person".

You can just google a sample will put out by your state's bar association. Just make sure you follow the requirements of your state to make sure it is valid.

Yep, in Louisiana your handwritten will is sufficient. If it has multiple pages, be sure to sign & date all pages. Also, remember that your IRA accounts have beneficiaries and thus pass to the recipients outside of probate (no will necessary). Same is true for life insurance proceeds.

If you're in Louisiana, yes.

You can write a will (must be in your own handwriting) on a napkin if you want to and just date the will. No other requirements for this type of will. It's called an olographic will.

Or, you can type a will but you must have it notarized and signed by two witnesses. This is called a notarial will.

Do I have to detail all of my assets or can I use generic language? I'm in Texas so I'll have to check state law.

thanks everyone!

I'm not familiar with Texas law at all. Sorry.

Other states refer to a handwritten will as holographic.

In Louisiana it's referred to as olographic.
