I'm considering a somewhat of a lateral move to SLC in the near future (like next week). How is the Cost of Living? The local amenities?

I've don a little research, which mostly seems to be around people who freak out over the Mormon population. People are people, I doubt that would bother me.

Currently I have a job I can tolerate, and somewhat enjoy, with a ton of freedom working remotely in New Orleans, but would have to move to Baltimore soon most likely.

Or I can make a lateral move to SLC, work in office, doing similar things working for a company with way better benefits (including a 401k match).

Anyone have any experience there?

It's nice, close to the mountains, the people are some of the kindest people you will ever meet, clean, ect. Night life leaves much to be desired. There's lots of outdoor activities in the near vicinity, however.

Thanks, that's pretty much what I gather. It's way out there.

There's also the lateral move piece. Has anyone made a lateral move that was actually worth it in the end?

Was there last February and spent an afternoon downtown after skiing at Alta for the week. I liked it. Definitely not "popping" or anything, but I would move there if given the chance.

Not at all. I've spent a lot of time up there and like it quite a bit actually.

Salt Lake City

Been there for a work a few times. Being able to drive up to Park City or to the Unita forest is nice. There is a lot of out door activities that you can do, great hiking, skiing, etc. However, the food is pretty average at best. As mentioned the people were really nice.

A nice plus, SLC airport is a delta hub. That's a nice advantage that most cities its size do not have.

Yeah the outdoor part is nice. I can enjoy that.

I think the place would be fine, I guess on the money board it's a question of:

1) Lateral Moves
2) Benefits - How much do they matter?

It seems like it's a lateral move to a place that treats employees like gold. Modern pre-IPO startup, so tons of benefits, young workforce, 401k match, gym, free computer, fully stocked break room, catered lunch once a week, etc.

Compared with my current job, which is technically a startup, but acts more like a small corporate place. Major benefits, recently the 401k (no match), low key kind of drone like atmosphere that I've avoided because I work remotely. So I have freedom, and tons of it. But would probably not be the case and a move to Baltimore is all a but inevitable.

I have absolutely no lean right now.

If you believe the benefits of the SLC office environment will improve your productivity (quality & quantity) significantly over the BLT office, then I would advise that all other things being equal, eventually a higher return ($$$) would come from the SLC office.

Money follows those who make a positive impact, and if you believe you can make a greater impact with the SLC office environment, then go for it.

This is probably true. But the big detractor is I probably get less exposure in the field and my job becomes more focused on sales/marketing rather than sales/program or partner development which is where it is now. That's the big thing in my head.

Very true. I have this belief in my head, and I'm still a young worker, that although I like my current job it isn't as good as it can be. But I can make it better! If I stay here and earn seniority, put in my time. I'm not sure how true that is though.

I thought the quality of life in SLC was terrific. Been away for a while but I liked it. The real difference is cultural. East coast was great for the urban experience. But the west (utah, etc.) is great for wholesome folks and the mountains for ski and hiking are very close. Airport access first rate. Economy is strong. Temperature inversions are becoming a nuisance in the SLC valley however.

Depends on what floats your boat.

If you love skiing/snowboarding, hiking, camping, and biking move there. If you don't love those things then don't. The outdoors is the draw there, there is no other reason to live there.

I've known several people who have ended up there for work and they all say the same thing - boooooooring. If you like skiing though, might be up your alley

If you need Baltimore advice, start another thread and I'll tell you everything you need to know. It's an awesome city if you know what you're doing

Just chiming in....already been said.....I love park city and the surrounding area. If you like any type of outdoor life.....running, hiking, skiing, snow boarding, bird watching, etc....it is the place for you.

I want to retire to the park city area....Logan seems sorta cool as well.

people get off work at 5 freaking o'clock & all seem to be on the road at the same time. By 6, all gone. Weird man.

Yes, I lived there. There was an interesting counter culture that existed as a foil to the predominant Mormonism. I enjoyed it. And I'm no saint.

Well, except for a different job

But yeah I like trail running, hiking, biking, etc. That's why I'm not too worried about that part. Plus I don't think it would be THAT boring. Right? It seems like they have a decent music scene, a lot of sun, etc. I mean, even winter just gives you something to do in terms of skiiing.
