When a potential head hunter or hiring manager asks about your current salary range, are you honest or do you inflate it a bit?

For the last two jobs I've inflated mine by 10% or so to try and get the best offer. I'd like to tell them nothing, but I don't think that would be received as well.

Just be careful. Sometimes they confirm that with your employer after an offer is accepted

I always inflate. Basically I tell them the salary+bonus+401k match when they ask my current salary. I present that as my base.

Like fin said. I just accepted position with Teledyne. They verified all income and my bonus from all my previous employment and current job. Education also. They hired some firm to do it. But the secretary came and ask me to confirm her releasing the info.

No. I tell them what I make and what it would take to move me.

I don't disclose my salary. What incentive do I have to tell them?

Best to talk in total compensation. Salary is important but how much take home pay comes from bonus, long term incentive, stock, 401k match, health care premiums, and anything else. I took a job with a slight bump in salary, but health premiums were a few hundred less per month, and had other benefits that more than made up for lack of larger salary

It's impossible to perfectly value total compensation. Every conversation starts with salary and variable with the assumption that benefits are comparable at large companies. If you find out the benefits suck, then they would never be competitive for talent.

I wouldn't say my current salary. My current salary is irrelevant for what they are willing to pay for me to produce in a role of need for them. They can tell me what they are willing to offer for the position and then it's on me for whether that works.

I won't tell them current salary, I only tell them the number it would take for me to change positions. I have some perks in my current position that are difficult to quantify like insurance fully paid by employer, major schedule flexibility, work from home option, deciding my own travel schedule. Those mean a lot to me and aren't necessarily reflected in me just telling someone a number. A headhunter getting me a $5-10k bump in salary wouldn't be enough if all those other factors weren't also included.

Has my refusal to disclose gotten pushback from head hunters? Yep, but then I remind them, "You called me. I wasn't even looking for a new job."
