Do you always counter the first offer?

I have a good job but I decided to interview with a recruiter from LinkedIn on a whim.

I received an offer today and it's decent. I've heard that you always counter the first offer... any suggestions?

I'm thinking about asking for 10k in hopes they meet me halfway for the 5k.

Any info would be great. Thanks!

So are you countering for 5 or 10k? Consider asking for an extra week off, too.

I would research salary data for that job in that area with your years of experience. You should be able to tell if they are offering above or below the avg. Make your decision based on data, not just because you think countering is expected. Look at benefits, job security, turnover, long term plans as well.

Sorry. I'm asking for 10k. They might meet me halfway with 5 which I would be happy with.

It's a regional sales job with 50-75% travel.

An extra 5k isn't all that much money unless the original offer is 50k.

Definitely go after the extra time off and make sure it's annual not just the first year. In my experience you can get more vacation time much easier than money in negotiations.

Original offer is Pretty high for a base salary. I just want an extra 5k hence asking for 10

That makes sense. I didn't ask for extra vacation days.

At first I wanted to ask for the extra 5k and another 4 days of vacation. I only get 2 weeks a year and 6 sick days but I will be working from home when I'm not traveling

Idk if that's low, but an easy ask is to get the vacation for the years of experience you are hired for and not your tenure with the company.

They came back with that is the package set in stone for first year newcomers.

Is this true?

No, I don't always counter, but it depends on your situation. If you say that you have a good job now, maybe it takes more to incentivize you to leave. If that means higher base salary, then ask for it. If vacation days are preferred, then go for that. Either way, be prepared for them to either say no or simply retract the offer completely.

The point is that this isn't negotiating the price of a car and you don't want to come off too arrogant in case you look to them for another job down the road.

Thanks. If I hit the bonus which I think I will, it's still a 20k raise over my current position.

I'm accepting it. Thanks for all the responses! Now I am scared to tell my bosses bc they are going to be very disappointed.

Why dont you give your current bosses a chance to counter the offer?

The base alone is more than what I made with commission last year. I just don't believe they can match it. Also, my current job only allows me to travel to Louisiana.

The new job is a traveling job and it's very appealing to me.

Who knows if I'm making a mistake but I want to take a chance.

Who knows, but if they don't want to play ball then that's that.

Either you accept or play hard ball and tell them you'll walk if they don't accept your offer and you'll find out for sure.

Yea I accepted and then gave my 2 weeks.. well in the meeting with my bosses... now he is trying to figure a way to counter. He doesn't want to let me go. It feels good that he thinks so highly of me but I wouldn't be in a regional position for at least another year.

He is coming back tomorrow with what he can do.

My experience is the opposite. Companies have policies for pto. They normally don't make exceptions
