I never worked for a railroad field job before. The company is a contractor for oil rig they offered me 19hr to start. The hours and schedule suck. What should I expect for advancing in this field and salary.

I know people will screw with you over there, but you may want to ask this on a high traffic board like OT.

I would be floored if someone knew the answer to a question like that.

ETA: meaning I would be shocked if someone on money talk knows the answer

Your best hope is to make an impression on the operating company and get on with them.

This. I'm a loader and dock operator also. My goal is to get on in the refinery itself, but they usually want atleast 2 years experience. So just do your job, put your time in and meet as many people as you can to get your name out

There was a guy who joined the railroad on the OT a few years ago. Ask there.

Doesn't CENLA work for a railroad company?

I work for Turner as a dock operator. Started at $19 and moved up to $24 less than 6 months later. Just biding my time until I can get on as an operator somewhere. If you haven't worked shift work before it's a mfer to get used to.

Work OT when they ask you to and kiss arse. That's about the best advice I can give.

Working for a company like UP in TE&Y is almost like a completely different industry than being hired as a railcar tech/loader.

Depends on what your goals are. If you want be an operator then it's a good start. Work as a loader a couple years and start applying for operator jobs. You can probably bump your pay up a couple dollars/hr for a couple years and should be able to get as much OT as you want. Not a whole lot of other upward potential that I know of.

I believe that's correct. He posted about how he wanted to drive trains and wound up doing it. Updates people from time to time, it's always an interesting read.

I suggest asking him, for obvious reasons. Even though he's an engineer he at least works in the industry.

Edit: I believe the full handle is CENLALSUFAN.
